50 years of trandisciplinarity - the demand is still current today

50 years ago an OECD working group developed approaches to inter- and transdisciplinary research. At that time, Switzerland played a key role in this process with the psychologist Jean Piaget. Now the OECD is presenting a new report and with Jakob Zinsstag (Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the td-net) Switzerland is once again playing a key role by contributing case studies from the Swiss research network.

Read more about transdisciplinary research or download the new OECD report - Addressing societal challenges using transdisciplinary research.

Publication Radar

Transdisciplinary publications again on the rise - td-net's publication radar shows that the constant upwards trend is ongoing! Sustainability and topics related to the environment are most prominent, and also public health, education, sociology, economics and linguistics show up in the top 20 research areas covered by TD publications. Go to the Radar

Methods matter! The functional-dynamic stakeholder involvement tool is online now!

The new method profile of the functional dynamic stakeholder involvement is available now in the td-net toolbox. This approach helps to specify which stakeholders are to be involved in which process step with which intensity. For each stakeholder, a dynamic thread of informative, consultative and collaborative interactions can be drawn along the research process.

Tour d'Horizon of Literature 2019: Reminder

From your point of view: What are the publications on inter- and transdisciplinarity published in 2019 that are especially relevant, innovative and/or provocative?

Every year we invite experts of inter- and transdisciplinarity to recommend the most important publications in the field of inter- and transdisciplinary research, education and practice. These recommendations will be compiled and published online on our website as «Tour d'Horizon 2019». Go to the survey!

We would highly appreciate your recommendations!

The survey remains open until June 25.

Story Completion exercices: An idea worth borrowing?

Story Completion is a qualitative research method. First developed by psychologists, it was subsequently re-conceptualised as a valuable method of accessing and investigating social discourses. Story completion is a useful tool for accessing meaning-making around a particular topic of interest. It is particularly useful for exploring (dominant) assumptions about a topic. This type of research can be framed as exploring either perceptions and understandings or social/discursive constructions of a topic. Story Completion could be useful for monitoring and evaluation purposes. They are a good way of identifying different stakeholders views of the possible consequences of an intervention. Guiding collaborative conversations and connections with probing questions

How to ignite collaborative discovery using 5 questions is discussed by Yulia Strekalova and Wayne McCormack in their blog post.

1) What personal expertise & interests are represented in the room? 2) What resources are available and can be freely shared? 3) What opportunities for collaboration emerge? 4) What are the Big Easy collaborative opportunities? 5) What specific small action will take place in the next 14-30 days?

Increased patient involvement and lasting networks in clinical research

Profound changes are reshaping clinical research not only in Switzerland but around the globe. These changes are creating new trends and opening up new opportunities. In response to these changes, the Swiss Clinical Trial Organisation (SCTO) wants to actively involve patients in clinical research and achieve an increased and longer-lasting collaboration between all parties involved in clinical research for the upcoming 2021-2024 performance period. These new priorities will be pursued with Cordula Landgraf who is a proven expert in these areas.

Strategic Storytelling in TD-Research Projects

Communication is key for the successful positioning of ideas, innovations or projects. This is particularly true in TD-Research Projects which normally involve actors with different backgrounds, disciplines and interests (research, practical). Strategic storytelling is key for successful communication. Therefore, it makes sense to accompany TD-Research Projects with a storytelling approach.

Strategic storytelling comprises three elements:
1. Creating Identity with a good “key story”
2. Short “success stories”, illustrating what needs to be seen more of, to bring the “key story” to fly
3. Capacity in the project for storytelling.
