Around Nature

Did you know that clove and nutmeg changed the world forever? Those were the main motivations for the Spanish pioneers (“la Armada de la Especiería”) to travel around the world 500 years ago. Because of their search, the first global commercial route was established, connecting three continents ecologically and gastronomically, and setting the bases for our current globalized world. If you think it is a bit of an exaggeration two tiny spices were able to do so, don't miss out Around Nature.

Get on the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain's board to virtually explore the first circumnavigation of the world! Around Nature is a multidisciplinary project presented with artist Juanli Carrión and co-hosted with The Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences that analyzes some of the socio-botanical consequences of the Magellan-Elcano expedition on the occasion of the 5th Centenary of the first trip around the world.

In these series of three virtual panel discussions, biologists, ecologists, chefs, historians, scholars and artists will be all hands on deck and discuss the Value, the Trade and the Taste of Nature using Juanli Carrión's artistic garden design and the first circumnavigation as starting points. Ready for the voyage? Hoist the sails!

Hot Off the Press: “Four by Four” by Sara Mesa

Widely praised for her concise and sharp writing style, Sara Mesa’s works of fiction have been recognized by Spain’s top literature prizes. A finalist for the Herralde prize, Four by Four is her latest translated novel and is now available in the U.S.

Set entirely at Wybrany College –a school where the wealthy keep their kids safe from the chaos erupting in the cities– Four by Four is a novel of insinuation and gossip, in which the truth about Wybrany's “program” is always palpable, but never explicit.

An exploration of the relationship between the powerful and powerless– and the repetition of these patterns– Mesa's “sophisticated nightmare” calls to mind great works of gothic literature and social thrillers to create a unique, unsettling view of freedom and how a fear of the outside world can create monsters.
