|
|
|
| | Undeniably our faculty fellows and graduate student fellows faced difficulty in the past year to make progress on international projects, but many researchers were able to pivot their timelines or adapted their plans to fit remote kinds of research or turned to publishing their work. Every year CISSR funds multiple book awards for publication costs and book workshops, and during 2020-21, we have awarded six faculty with book awards for translations and manuscripts in political science, history, and sociology, all forthcoming in the next few years with announcements to be shared in upcoming digests. Additionally, this year we celebrated two (virtual) book releases with faculty who were awarded CISSR Book Workshop and Monograph Enhancement Awards previously: Property Without Rights: Origins
and Consequences of the Property Rights Gap by Michael Albertus was released by Cambridge University Press in March 2021 (18-19 Book Workshop Award) Watch his book talk held on March 23rd moderated by Susan Stokes and hosted by CISSR, Seminary Co-op & the Center for Latin American Studies. He shares further insight on his research methods, the consequences of specific reform programs, and how land and property rights are linked to poverty and inequality. Violencia
y Paz en la Guerra Contra Las Drogas: Ofensivas Estatales y Carteleles en
America Latina was published by Universidad de Los Andes Press / CESED and
translated by Patricia Torres Londoño, translated from Benjamin Lessing's 2018 book Making
Peace In Drug Wars: Cartels and Crackdowns in Latin America, originally published by Cambridge University Press Studies in Comparative
Politics in 2018 (18-19 Translation Book Award). Watch CISSR's co-hosted launch event from November 24th to celebrate the publication of the Spanish-language translation of Making Peace in Drug Wars. The Spanish-language event featured a conversation with Lessing, Angélica Durán, and Daniel Mejía and was co-hosted the Center for Latin American Studies and the Centro de Estudios Sobre Seguridad y Drogas at the Universidad de los Andes. Despite the difficulties of the pandemic, the international research community remains adaptable and committed to global questions which affect us all. The outcomes of their research amid a world-changing pandemic drive CISSR’s dedication to supporting creative ways to continue researching our world and providing funding to publish the best of the University’s international social science research to reach the most audiences. For more information about our various programs and fellows’ activities, our digest archive can be found on our website.

| CISSR Faculty Fellow Michael Albertus evaluates outcome of Peru’s presidential election
Following a nail-biting election, Leftist outsider Pedro Castillo recently emerged victorious in Peru’s presidential election—an outcome that no one predicted months ago, rattling investors and the political establishment. Should they be so worried? In a new article for Foreign Policy, 20-21 CISSR Faculty Fellow Michael Albertus suggests this panic is overblown: Castillo has thus far signaled his intention to adopt a more centrist political agenda. Instead, the greatest political risk posed by Castillo is that, in the face of stark political opposition, he may force a referendum on a new constitution—a move that could forge a much-needed egalitarian social contract in Peru, but one that could also be “hijacked by radicals” nonetheless.

| CISSR Rudolph Fellow reflects on Sheikh Jarrah & Palestinian mobilization in university panel
20-21 CISSR Rudolph Fellow Hadeel Badarni recently participated in a panel discussion co-hosted by UChicago’s Global Studies program, the Pozen Family Center for Human Rights, 3CT, Center for Middle Eastern Studies, and the Arab Studies Institute. In “Ongoing Nakba: Reflections on Palestine from Sheikh-Jarrah to Gaza”, five scholars discussed the most recent developments and mobilizations across Palestine; in particular, panelists noted the intersections between various anti-colonial social movements around the world, such as those connecting Palestinian activists with U.S. abolitionists.
