Eleven of UCSF's research specialties were ranked in the top 10 in the 2021 U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings. Many DOM divisions’ rankings contributed to our campus’ overall success, including clinical medicine (tied #3), infectious diseases (#5), oncology (#6), public, environmental and occupational health (#10), gastroenterology and hepatology (#15), endocrinology and metabolism (#17), and cardiac and cardiovascular systems (#18). Meshell Johnson was named DOM Associate Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Jeff Kohlwes was named Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at SFVAHCS.

Urmimala Sarkar was named DOM Associate Chair for Faculty Experience.

Ted Abraham was named Chief Medical Officer of Strategy for the UCSF Health Affiliates Network.

Peter Chin-Hong received the Covid-19 Physician Award from the Association of Black Cardiologists.

Deborah Yokoe was named Vice President of the Board of Trustees for the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.

 DOM IN THE NEWS

Louise Aronson was quoted in the SF Chronicle explaining how many older adults are struggling with loneliness as the pandemic continues.

Diane Havlir was featured in a Mission Local article describing her research and alliance with Mission District community leaders to reduce Covid-19 transmissions in the Latinx community, where positivity rates remain higher than those in the rest of the city’s population.

Peter Chin-Hong was quoted in the SF Chronicle and New York Times regarding recent studies on remdesivir after the federal government approved its use on hospitalized Covid-19 patients. He was also quoted, along with Monica Gandhi, Chaz Langelier, and George Rutherford, in the SF Chronicle regarding safely gathering for the holidays during Covid-19.

Alicia Fernandez was quoted in the SF Chronicle about the high antibody rates among Latino and indigenous residents in Oakland’s Fruitvale district.

Margot Kushel was featured in The Mercury News about how coronavirus is changing the Bay Area’s homelessness crisis.

Bob Wachter was featured in several media outlets (including the Washington Post, The Atlantic, LA Times, SF Chronicle, Democracy in Color, and Healthcare Consumer Rights Foundation podcast) regarding San Francisco’s approach to Covid-19, potential treatments, and vaccines.

 NEWLY AWARDED GRANTS

Payam Nahid and team: a cooperative agreement of $6.9M over 5 years from the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases for a project entitled, “DRAMATIC phase 2 duration randomized MDR-TB treatment trial.”

Jimmie Ye and team: a grant of $4M over 4 years from the National Human Genome Research Institute for a project entitled, “Mapping gene-by-environment interactions using multiplexed single cell RNA-sequencing.”

Sheri Weiser and team: a grant of $4M over 5 years from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for a project entitled, “Intersection of material-need insecurities and HIV and cardiovascular health.”

Edward Machtinger and team: a grant of $2.7M over 3 years from Genentech for a project entitled, “Whole family wellness response to children experiencing adverse childhood events (ACEs).”
