Maxine Davis was named director of finance and administration of DOM at SFVAHCS and manager of the Division of Occ-Med.

Jesus Ramirez-Valles was named chief of the Division of Prevention Science and the Walter Gray Endowed Chair in HIV/AIDS Science.

Urmimala Sarkar received the Harold S. Luft Award for Mentoring in Health Services and Health Policy Research from the Philip R. Lee Institute.

 HOLLY SMITH AWARD FOR EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE

Diane Havlir and Leticia Rolon received the Holly Smith Award for Exceptional Service to the School of Medicine, which recognizes dedication to the School of Medicine, diversity in roles played, and commitment to sustaining UCSF’s position as a world-class institution.

 NEWLY ELECTED MEMBERS TO THE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN PHYSICIANS (AAP)


Esteban Burchard, Alexander Marson, Phil Rosenthal, and Prescott Woodruff were elected to the Association of American Physicians (AAP), a society founded to advance scientific medical
practice.

 DIVISION OF GERIATRICS RECEIVES $23M STATE CONTRACT

Anna Chodos and Josette Rivera received $23 million from the California Department of Health Care Services for Dementia Aware, a statewide, multi-site program that aims to improve the lives of people living with dementia and those who support them. Read more here.

Jennifer Babik was named to the 2022 CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame.

Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo will join JAMA and JAMA Network™ as editor-in-chief, effective July 1.

Christopher Cheung received a Young Investigator Award in Clinical Investigations from the American College of Cardiology (ACC).

Catherine Crawford and James Salazar received Teaching Excellence Awards for Cherished Housestaff (T.E.A.C.H.) from the School of Medicine Class of 2022.

Catherine Lau and Mitchell Luu received Excellence in Teaching for Clinical Faculty Awards from the School of Medicine Class of 2022.

Connor O'Brien received a CardioOncology Young Author Achievement Award from the Journals of the American College of Cardiology (JACC).

Sheri Weiser was selected for the National Academies Climate Security Roundtable to consider climate change and U.S. national security.

 DOM IN THE NEWS

Julia Adler-Milstein, Maria Byron, and Timothy Judson were featured in STAT News explaining UCSF’s new initiative to let clinicians bill insurers for time spent answering patient emails.

Peter Chin-Hong was quoted by CNN expressing surprise at the rise in cases in San Francisco, and on STAT News about how those being hospitalized now are the elderly who are vaccinated but not boosted. He also spoke to Matter of Fact TV explaining that while BA.2 is more transmissible, it does not cause more serious illness.

Monica Gandhi wrote op-eds for Medpage Today, the San Francisco Chronicle, and Smerconish about how to manage Covid going forward.

Bob Wachter spoke on the Pod Save America podcast about the appropriateness of dropping the federal mask mandate. He was also interviewed by Scientific American explaining factors that determine personal risk.

Laura Koth and team: a grant of over $4.6M over 4 years from the National Heart, Lung & Blood institute for a project entitled, “Development of clinical prediction models for pulmonary outcomes in sarcoidosis.”

Flavio Vincenti and team: a grant of $2.9M over 2.8 years from the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases for a project entitled, “Applying precision MEdicine to optimize desensitization with noveL bIOlogics or cellular theRApies in highly sensiTized kidney transplant patiEnts (AMELIORATE).”

Patrick Phillips and team: a grant of $1.8M over 7 years from the European Union/European commission for a project entitled “UNITE4TB: Accelerating the development of new treatment regimens for tuberculosis.”
