The CZ Biohub aims to undertake innovative research that will help solve the greatest challenges
in medicine.

 HONORS AND NEWS

Will Brown was announced as the vice chair of the Scientific Program Committee for the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) 2022 Annual Symposium.

Molly Heublein and Era Kryzhanovskaya launched a podcast series, The Curbsiders Teach, about medical education.

Chi-yuan Hsu received a Top 10 Clinical Research Achievement Award for his New England Journal of Medicine paper, “Race, Genetic Ancestry, and Estimating Kidney Function in Chronic Kidney Disease.”

Alka Kanaya co-chaired a trans-NIH workshop to address opportunities in health and prevention research for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. She and Tung Nguyen were authors on the accompanying report in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Uma Mahadevan received the American Gastroenterological Association Research Mentor Award for 2022.

Neil Powe received a Heroes and Hearts Award from the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation.

Dean Schillinger, as co-chair of the Federal Diabetes Commission, submitted a landmark report to the U.S. Congress. He also authored a summary of the report in Health Affairs.

Dean Sheppard was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Sofia Zamudio-Haas was named a UCSF Population Health & Health Equity Scholar.

 NEW ASSOCIATE CHAIR FOR EDUCATION

Brian Schwartz was named the new
Associate Chair for Education, effective July 1. He will be taking over for Pat Cornett, who is stepping down after 21 years. Read the announcement here.

Julia Adler-Milstein was interviewed on Marketplace discussing inefficiencies in the current system for transferring medical records. She was also quoted on Politico about benefits and risks of national patient IDs.

Judith Auerbach was quoted in The Hill about how messaging from the CDC isn’t always clear because Covid information is always changing.

Peter Chin-Hong was interviewed on NPR saying that people who are boosted are at low risk for the new BA.2 variant. He was also quoted in The New York Times explaining how much an infection boosts your immunity to Covid and in The Wall Street Journal discussing differences between molecular and rapid antigen tests.

Monica Gandhi appeared on the MM+M/Real Chemistry podcast explaining differences between Omicron and Delta. She was also quoted by MSN saying that vaccines will work against the BA.2 variant and in The Hill saying that Omicron may be peaking.

Chi-yuan Hsu and Cynthia Delgado were quoted in Undark about ending the use of race in diagnosing kidney disease.

Catherine Lucey was interviewed on NPR describing how Covid has changed medical education.

Marlene Martin was interviewed by the SF Chronicle about how to care for patients with opioid addiction and in their video feature about the fentanyl public health crisis.

Sriram Shamasunder was featured on NPR, emphasizing that the mental health toll of the pandemic should not be ignored.

Bob Wachter was quoted on NPR about treatments for the immunocompromised who get Covid. He also appeared on MSNBC about how difficult it is emotionally when a loved one has Covid and on CNN discussing the outlook for the Omicron surge.

Zian Tseng and team: a grant of $4M over 5 years from the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute for a project entitled, “Clonal hematopoeisis of indeterminate potential and risk of autopsy-defined sudden cardiac death.”

Franklin Huang, Nynikka Palmer, Jimmie Ye, Elad Ziv, and team: a grant of $2M over 3 years from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative for a project entitled, “An atlas of the human prostate across ancestries.”     

Babak Javid and team: a grant of $1.4M over 2 years from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for a project entitled, “Pre-clinical evaluation of novel subunit tuberculosis vaccines.”
