In 2018, the Department of Medicine (DOM) received the most NIH funding of any department in the U.S. for the 7th year in a row, with more than $200M in NIH funding, representing 35% of the $578M received by the School of Medicine. Read more about the rankings here.

 HONORS AND NEWS

Brian Graham was named division chief of ZSFG Pulmonary and Critical Care.

Hal Collard was named Associate Vice Chancellor of Clinical Research.

Chi Hsu was elected to the Association of American Physicians (AAP).

Christine Ritchie and Alex Smith received the 2019 UCSF Academic Senate Distinction in Mentoring Awards at the Professor and Associate level, respectively.

Justin Moore is the new division manager for ZSFG Experimental Medicine.

Henry Crevensten was named Deputy Director of VA Primary Care.

Maya Dulay was named Director of the VA Medical Practice Clinic.

Beth Harleman will serve as the School of Medicine's Strategic Plan Implementation Leader.

Oanh Nguyen received the 2019 Junior Investigator Award from the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM).

Ross Okimoto received the 2019 Young Physician-Scientist Award from the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI).

Shalini Patel was named Director of VA Primary Care.

Lekshmi Santhosh received the 2019 APCCMPD, CHEST, and ATS Education Research Award from the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors.

Elad Ziv and Niharika Dixit and team received the California Initiative to Advance Precision Medicine (CIAPM) Award for Reducing Cancer Disparities through Collaborative Precision Medicine Care.

 2019 DOM LEADERSHIP RETREAT

On February 8, 2019, the Department of Medicine held its annual leadership retreat at the UCSF Aldea Center. The retreat, attended by division chiefs, managers, and other department leaders, focused on the recruitment and retention of faculty in the department. Read more about the retreat here.

 DOM FIRESIDE CHATS

The next Fireside Chat will be held on Tuesday March 19, 12-1pm, Room M989, Parnassus. Bob Wachter will interview Steve Schroeder, professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and director of the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center. Margot Kushel was featured in a New York Times article discussing the benefits of increasing the minimum wage.

Paul Volberding was featured in a KQED article discussing his cautious optimism about President Trump’s plan to end HIV transmission by 2030.

 NEWLY AWARDED GRANTS

Gregory Marcus and team: a grant of $2.8M over 4 years from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute for a project entitled, "Transseptal versus Retrograde Aortic Approach to Left Ventricular Catheter Ablation."

Joel Ernst and team: a grant of $1.3M over 2 years from the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for a project entitled, “Antigen export in M. tuberculosis evasion of CD4 T cells.”

Joshua Vasquez and team: a grant of $1M over 5 years from the NIH National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute for a project entitled, "The impact of the HIV reservoir on pulmonary myeloid cells: virology, phenotype, and function."
