A monthly newsletter of honors and accomplishments
December 2021

We're thrilled that our residents enjoyed a wonderful fellowship match, with matches in many of the nation's top programs across a broad range of specialties. We're particularly pleased that 21 of our 41 residents applying this year matched in a UCSF fellowship!

 HONORS & NEWS

Jessica Briggs, Melissa Conrad, Bryan Greenhouse, and Phil Rosenthal received funding from the Bill & Melissa Gates Foundation to implement malaria molecular surveillance in Uganda.

Kathleen Liu was named associate chief of the Division of Nephrology at UCSF Health.

Dean Schillinger was awarded a WHO Non-Communicable Disease Lab Award for The Bigger Picture, a public health literacy campaign that uses youth spoken-word artists of color to prevent type 2 diabetes through social and environmental activism.

 DOM IN THE NEWS

Anna Chodos appeared on Newsroom@Home discussing the challenges of caring for elders during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ken Covinsky and Stephanie Rogers were interviewed by the AAMC explaining how collaboration between departments can benefit geriatric patients.

Monica Gandhi wrote an op-ed for The Atlantic saying that the new oral antivirals represent a big advance in the treatment of patients with Covid, and one for the San Francisco Chronicle about when outbreaks are or are not a cause for concern. She was also featured in the San Francisco Chronicle with Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, Peter Chin-Hong, and George Rutherford saying holiday plans can still go forward for those who are vaccinated and boosted.

Bob Wachter appeared on the PBS NewsHour and In the Bubble with Andy Slavitt about the efficacy of boosters, his risk tolerance, and the safety of being around others during the holidays. He was also interviewed on NPR and quoted in The New York Times about how Covid will be here for the next several years.
