 NEW DIABETES CENTER DIRECTOR

Mark Anderson was named director of the Diabetes Center at UCSF.

 NEW DIVISION OF HOSPITAL MEDICINE CHIEF

Margaret Fang was named chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine at UCSF Health.

 NEWLY ELECTED MEMBERS TO THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR CLINICAL INVESTIGATION


Peter Hunt, Kathleen Liu, Gregory Marcus, and Anthony Shum were elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), a prestigious honor society for physician-scientists.

 OTHER HONORS AND NEWS

Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo was named one of 46 changemakers and leaders in life sciences, medicine, & health by STAT news.

Edward Goetzl received a $550K gift to establish the John and Josephine Brusasco Endowed Fellowship Fund for Allergy Research.

Katie Kelley, Neil Mehta, and Francis Yao received a $450K gift to establish the Downstaging for Liver Transplant Fund, aimed at studying systemic therapies in the liver transplant downstaging setting.

Nghiem Ha, Lowell Lo, Kathleen Liu, Leslie Seijo, and Rupal Shah were among the recipients of 2021-22 UCSF Health Exceptional Physician Awards.

Timothy Judson and Stephanie Rogers have been selected as co-directors of Adult Care Transitions at UCSF Health.

 INTRODUCING DOMINOs

DOMINOs (Department of Medicine Informal Networking Opportunities) is a new DOM-sponsored program for DOM faculty, staff, and trainees to help them connect with colleagues and expand personal networks. Find out more about DOMINOs here, including how to host and/or attend an event.

 DOM EXCELS IN NIH FUNDING

In 2021, the DOM received the third most NIH funding of any department in the U.S., with more than $234M in NIH grants and contracts (a 5% increase over 2020), representing 37% of the $626M received by the School of Medicine. Read more here.

 DOM COHORT GRANT: DUE APRIL 30

Each year, the DOM offers grants of up to $100,000 to initiate new patient cohorts or expand the use of existing cohorts. Assistant and associate professors are eligible to
apply. Applications are due April 30, 2022
by 5pm.

 DOM IN THE NEWS

Peter Chin-Hong was featured on NPR saying five days may not be enough isolation time when recovering from Covid and on KQED discussing California’s shift to an endemic strategy and the lifting of mask mandates. He was also quoted on NPR about the high cost of remdesivir.

Monica Gandhi was interviewed on NPR explaining metrics for dropping mask mandates, on CNN describing how natural immunity plus vaccination may create a stronger immune response than either one alone, and on ABC7 discussing the possibility of a second booster.

Dawn Gross was quoted in the Washington Post explaining when a patient is eligible for hospice care and what benefits are available.

Jennifer Price and the DeLIVER Care team were featured on KALW about how they are bringing mobile treatment to hepatitis C patients. 

Lekshmi Santhosh wrote an op-ed for the SF Chronicle describing her family’s experience with Covid.

Dean Schillinger was quoted in the New York Times warning that biased language in physician notes can erode patients’ trust in their health care providers.

Eleanor Bimla Schwarz was featured on KQED explaining that tubal ligation and IUDs are less effective at preventing pregnancy than expected.

Sriram Shamasunder wrote an op-ed for NPR reflecting on his memories of Dr. Paul Farmer.

Bob Wachter was quoted in the New York Times and on NPR weighing in about the lifting of mask mandates. He also wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post describing how he decides whether to wear a mask.

Mark Looney and team: a grant of $3.9M over seven years from the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute for a project entitled, “Immunobiology of the normal and injured lung.”

Courtney Lyles and team: a grant of $3.6M over five years from the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute for a project entitled, “Remote monitoring for Equity in Advancing Control of Hypertension (REACH).”  

Alka Kanaya and team: a grant of $1.2M over  one year from the  National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute  for a project entitled, “Metabolic effects and mechanisms for heart failure in South Asians.”
