Michelle Albert, Professor in the Division of Cardiology at UCSF Health, was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). Her election raises the UCSF representation in the NAM to 118 members, of whom 23 are DOM faculty. In addition, Michelle was named to the Advisory Committee to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (ACD).

 HONORS AND NEWS

Esteban Burchard was this year's UCSF Academic Senate Faculty Research Lecturer in Clinical Science.

Chris Cassel received the Walsh McDermott Medal for distinguished service to the National Academy of Medicine.

Ida Sim was named UCSF Program Director for a new joint UCSF-UC Berkeley PhD Program in Computational Precision Health.  

 OTHER HONORS & NEWS

The Health At Home Mobile COVID-19 Vaccination Team, with Anna Chodos as one of the program developers, received a Health Commission 2021 Award from the San Francisco Health Commission.

Naomi Jay was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing.  

Patti Katz received the Lawren H. Daltroy Award for Excellence in Health Communication from the 21st Century Lupus Congress.

Liviu Klein was named Chief of the Advanced Heart Failure & Pulmonary Hypertension Section and Medical Director of the Heart Failure Comprehensive Care Center at UCSF Health.

Angela Marks was named DOM Administrative Director of Clinical Initiatives, charged with helping to expand our presence in the UCSF Health Affiliates Network and improving ambulatory affairs and clinical productivity.

Rupal Shah has been selected as Medical Director of Adult Inpatient Patient Experience at UCSF Health.

Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, Alicia Fernandez, Monica Gandhi, Diane Havlir, Margot Kushel, and Carina Marquez (pictured left to right) received 2021 Distinguished Citizens Awards from the Commonwealth Club.

 DOM IN THE NEWS

Louise Aronson was quoted by CNN about how vaccines prevented tens of thousands of deaths among seniors.

Peter Chin-Hong appeared on CBS5 News discussing booster shots. He was also quoted in the SF Chronicle explaining the new AY.4.2 variant, and in CNet encouraging flu shots.

Anna Chodos was quoted in the SF Chronicle about how caregivers can commit elder abuse, and in the Mercury News saying that it’s important to plan for older years.

Alfred Chung was quoted by KTVU urging cancer patients to get a booster shot.

Monica Gandhi was featured in the SF Chronicle about her approach to Covid safety measures. She was also quoted in Salon explaining that states with low vaccine percentages fared worse, and was interviewed by NPR about how mixing vaccine doses results in a more active immune response.

Krista Harrison was quoted in Forbes about how dealing with grief is necessary, and in Healio about how academia doesn’t provide sufficient support for those who are grieving.

Chi-yuan Hsu was quoted in the Kaiser Permanente Research and Innovation News and featured in the NIH Director’s Blog about how using using cystatin C, rather than creatinine, can remove race as a factor in estimating kidney function.

Bob Wachter was featured in the Wall Street Journal about how early detection of Covid is the biggest benefit of rapid testing. He was also profiled in the SF Chronicle discussing “the new normal,” and was quoted in the Washington Post about continuing to be safe while the pandemic winds down.

 DOM SPIRIT AWARD FOR STAFF

The SPIRIT of DOM Award recognizes our staff members who exemplify the UCSF PRIDE Values and make the DOM and UCSF a better place to work. Nominations are due by Monday, 11/22.

 NEW RESEARCH COORDINATING CENTER

Edwin Charlebois was named co-director of the new Research Coordinating Center to Reduce Disparities in Multiple Chronic Diseases (RCC-RD-MCD), funded by a five-year $22.5 million grant from the NIMHD.

John Sauceda and team: a grant of $3.5M over 5 years from the National Institute of Mental Health for a project entitled, “Investigating psychosocial experiences of HIV cure trial participants undergoing extended HIV treatment interruptions: Implications for ethical conduct.”

Greg Marcus and team: a grant of $3.3M over 5 years from the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute for a project entitled, “Applying digital health to the AF ablation National Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR), enabling longitudinal follow-up.”

Gabriela Schmajuk and team: a grant of over $3.3M over 5 years from the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal & Skin Diseases for a project entitled, “Impact of registry use on quality and outcomes in rheumatology (QORA).”
