This Week’s Thinking:

In the last couple of years our Western Heights Staff Whanau have lost a lot of family members.

In these times of sadness our staff have risen up to provide the most amazing care and support - it is beautiful and humbling to see so much care, concern and generosity. We really are a family.

This caused me to reflect a bit too. I used to have a boss whose first answer was always NO. Sometimes he would say No - but, sometimes just No and sometimes he would change his mind.

I prefer YES - AND as response. Yes And let’s consider… Yes And how about we…

Instead of seeing the problems, we look to find ways to improvise, see opportunities, make it work.

Yes And fosters innovation and creativity. It opens people up to seeing they can try, that ideas are accepted, that failure is also accepted and OK - especially when we learn from it.

Yes And helps prevent us from jumping in and making a decision too quickly - one that could easily prevent something good from being created or innovated.

I looked at Yes And from another perspective too. I have a family and I love them dearly. If I am talking about loving my Western Heights family is that robbing my family in some ways.

I have decided not. I love my family - Yes And I love my Western Heights family. One does not diminish the other.

About 19 years ago my mum passed away - on Jacqueline's and my first wedding anniversary. Three days earlier mum had been awarded South Island Ballroom Dancing Champion for Seniors and just three days later she became the oldest person in NZ to die from Meningococcal  Meningitis.

A week before this mum had travelled up to visit us in Tauranga and had given me a big, loving hug and said some words about being her lovely boy - I had been a bit embarrassed and cut the hug short. If only I could have that time over - but I can’t, so… I am learning to say Yes And…

I have also learned the value of a hug, and I am never ever passing up an opportunity to hug and mean it ever again.

Maybe that helps you understand me a little better now. It also ties in well with the thought I saw below.

This Week’s News:

My apologies for mistakenly writing this year is the Year of the Tiger in last week’s newsletter. According to the Chinese Calendar, it is the year of the Rat - but as you should now all know, at Western Heights it is the Year of the Turtle(s).

Turtles will be featuring in much of what we do this year - they are one of the things that make our school unique, so we are celebrating them going forward.

The BIG EVENT TONIGHT is our Meet Our Teachers Evening.

This is an opportunity to come and have a picnic, have a stroll around our school and see what is changing and then come and hear from our Team Leaders as they introduce the teachers in the teams and share a little of what to expect in 2020.

I will also share a bit about our values, philosophy and approach to teaching and learning - What We Believe, Why We Believe It and How We Put It Into Action.

Novel Corona Virus - Latest Update:

We do know the risk of the virus spreading in New Zealand is very low .

How worried should I be?

Your chances of catching the coronavirus in New Zealand are very low.

It is highly unlikely you will catch the virus walking down the street

Coronavirus appears to be as infectious as the flu and the symptoms are similar - fever, cough and shortness of breath. You are only likely to catch it if you are near to someone with the virus. Most people catch the virus from someone at home, a close workmate or someone they spend time with.

People will not be moving around the community if they are suspected or confirmed of having the virus – they will be in isolation. Their family and anyone they may have infected will also be asked to stay at home.

How serious is coronavirus?

People are being infected, mainly in China, but only a small number of those with coronavirus have died.

Most people have a mild to moderate illness with flu-like symptoms

People of all ages are being infected, but older people and those with medical conditions seem most likely to get seriously ill.

How do I protect myself and my family?

Everyone should protect themselves from the virus, as you would for the ‘flu -

Washing your hands regularly, or using hand sanitiser, is the best way to avoid this illness.

As with other illnesses, do not go to work or school, or see visitors if you are sick.

Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or clothing, and wash hands afterwards

Avoid being near to people who are sick

Washing your hands often and covering coughs and sneezes will do more to protect you from the virus than a mask.

If you are sharing food, use utensils to serve the food and keep your personal spoon, fork, or chopsticks separate to avoid transmission through saliva.

What should I do if I think I could have coronavirus?

If you start to experience mild symptoms, then stay at home and call Healthline for advice: 0800 611 116. Interpreters are available on request.

If you start to experience more severe symptoms arrange to see a doctor urgently. Call ahead and mention your travel history. Difficulty breathing requires immediate medical attention and can be a sign of pneumonia.

Where can I find more information?

Information is updated regularly on the             Ministry of Health website

This Week’s Star:

At the end of last year Hayley and her mum presented this wonderful book to our school library - “101 Awesome Women Who Changed The World” by Julia Adams.

Inside the book is a message that reads -

“Thank you Western Heights. What an awesome school. The teachers are passionate educators and they truly care about the kids.

We have had a wonderful time here as a family, with some amazing experiences and opportunities.

We could not have asked for a more caring, inclusive and and warm environment for our children.

Thank you again - the Jensen Family.                      2011 to 2019

This Week’s Thanks:

Helen Rollo is one of those quiet and unassuming teachers who just get things done with no fuss or fanfare. She is a wonderful teacher and also a fine gardener.

Under Helen’s guidance our children have established and maintained an excellent Enviro Garden here.

Helen lives on the North Shore but managed to find ways to ensure the garden more than just survived over summer.

Her garden team have harvested lots of beautiful veggies - including new potatoes and these fine carrots.

Thanks Helen - gardening is an important life-skill for our children, so we appreciate your work.

WHS Marimba Band, Ukulele Band and Choir

Marimba Band, Ukulele Band and Choir auditions will happen on Friday 21 February. If your children are musical, love to sing and move to the groove, encourage them to join one of these groups. The kids don’t necessarily have to be taking music lessons - these bands are a joy to be in.

Each of these groups will practice every Friday throughout the year in preparation for assemblies, end of year performances in Henderson and in three festival events between September and November.

The experience of performing in festivals with up to 1,000 other kids is unforgettable.

Mastering complicated music for multiple instruments draws out collaboration, dedication, patience and discipline many children find irresistible and satisfying.   Please encourage your child to put their name forward if you know this experience will get them skipping, dancing and singing their hearts out.

School Donations - We Are NOT Asking For Them but You Can If You Want To:

This Week’s Story:

The Obstacle In Our Path (Opportunity)

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. He then hid himself and watched to see if anyone would move the boulder out of the way. Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it.

Many people loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none of them did anything about getting the stone out of the way.

A peasant then came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to push the stone out of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded.

After the peasant went back to pick up his vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been.

The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King explaining that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway.

Moral of the story:

Every obstacle we come across in life gives us an opportunity to improve our circumstances, and whilst the lazy complain, the others are creating opportunities through their kind hearts, generosity, and willingness to get things done.
