We hope this bulletin will keep you up-to-date with topical financial matters that can directly affect you… and your money!

Christmas is traditionally a time of goodwill and optimism… and promises of better things to come.

Promises to be delivered?

Now the election is over and Boris Johnson has been re-installed at No.10, the nation will be waiting to see just how many of the promises made over recent weeks will actually be honoured… and how many will ultimately be discarded during the months to come.

Many of the promises (made by all parties) centred on future spending plans and after years of austerity there has been a rush to claim that some loosening of the public purse strings will lead to the funding of various worthwhile projects.

However, before bidding a not-so-fond farewell to Ebenezer Scrooge and a joyous hello to the Good Samaritan, it may still be worth bearing in mind the words of Margaret Thatcher on the subject of government borrowing:

“Let us never forget this fundamental truth. The State has no source of money other than the money people earn themselves. If the State wishes to spend more, it can do so only by borrowing your savings or by taxing you more. There is no such thing as public money, there is only tax payers’ money.” 

Our Prime Minister will doubtless continue to be a leader that polarises opinion and seems destined to be liked no more or less than he is disliked. However, he has promised us Brexit on 31st January 2020 and a ‘great deal’ by the end of 2020… which we now await with baited breath.

Many business have stated that they have been delaying investment until after Brexit has been done so, tentatively at least, we also look forward to the entire nation becoming the “economic powerhouse” that Boris has promised it will be.

2019 - A Brief Market Summary
