UCSF has received a $30 million donation from Marc and Lynne Benioff to launch a rigorous academic research program on homelessness.The UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, led by Margot Kushel, MD, professor of medicine and director of the UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations (CVP), will strive to prevent and end homelessness by discovering, evaluating, and amplifying research-driven solutions, and training the next generation of policy-driven researchers. Michael Shlipak received the Barnwell Award, the VA's top national award for clinical research.

Maxine Davis and David Wofsy received the Holly Smith Award for Exceptional Service to the UCSF School of Medicine.

Denise Connor and Cindy Lai were named Gold-headed Cane Endowed Education Chair in Internal Medicine.

Deborah Grantz was named division manager for UCSF Health Hematology-Oncology.


Michelle Albert was named President of the Association of Black Cardiologists, Inc.

Mark Anderson received the 2019 University of Chicago Distinguished Service Award.

Peter Chin-Hong received the 2019 WGEA/AAMC Best Oral Research Presentation Award.

John Balmes wrote an opinion piece in the New York Times summarizing how air pollutants can pose a tremendous and growing risk to human health.

Pei Chen and Sei Lee were quoted in a New York Times article encouraging older patients with diabetes to ease up on efforts to achieve very low blood sugar levels, pointing out that the balance between benefits and risks shifts with age and illness.

Monica Gandhi and Paul Volberding were interviewed in a Carry the One Radio podcast discussing the HIV/AIDS crisis, treatments, and barriers that still remain today.

Dean Schillinger was quoted in a CNN article about how Black and Latino patients with diabetes are more likely to undergo amputations.

Rebecca Sudore was quoted in a Cancer Today magazine article about how advance care planning should be routine for cancer patients.


The next Fireside Chat will be held on Friday, May 10, 12-1pm, Room M989, Parnassus. Bob Wachter will interview Sam Hawgood, pediatrician, professor, and UCSF’s 10th chancellor. He leads UCSF at an extraordinary time of health system expansion and remarkable scientific advances, but also myriad challenges, ranging from health inequities to budget and space constraints. Priscilla Hsue and team: a grant of $2.9M over 4 years from the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute for a project entitled, "Effect of PCSK9 inhibition on cardiovascular risk in treated HIV infection (EPIC-HIV study)."

Elizabeth Dzeng and team: a grant of $2.1M over 5 years from the California Department of Public Health for a project entitled, “Human-centered design to mitigate burdensome life-sustaining treatment at the end-of-life.”

Trever Bivona and team: a grant of $1.6M over 5 years from the National Cancer Institute for a project entitled, "Rational combined inhibition of NF-kB and EGFR to optimize lung cancer treatment."
