From Andy and Liz…

As we have been delving into 1 Timothy this month at Barney’s, we have been considering various ways to avoid getting ‘shipwrecked’ in our faith (1 Tim 1:19). We have looked at 'keeping the main thing the main thing' and speaking and living the truth in love. Then we looked at how not to get shipwrecked on some of the tricky passages in the Bible (especially 1 Tim 2:12!) and that praying for all kinds of people is an important part keeping our faith away from the rocks! And last Sunday,  we looked at how not to get shipwrecked in our leadership.

There is so much wisdom in God’s word. What a blessing it is to have such practical advice and direction available by the Spirit in Scripture. And we are so blessed to have a team of great teachers at Barney’s who can help us engage with the Bible and understand what it has to say to us today. Although Paul was writing to Timothy in the midst of a very specific set of circumstances, there is so much that God can teach us through this letter. If you haven’t yet taken a few moments to read through the whole of 1 Timothy, we do encourage you to do so, and to ask the Holy Spirit to draw your attention to what he is wanting to say.

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. (1 Tim 1:17)

Praying for our Kids Praise Club

Kids Praise Club is our Sunday morning programme for those in Prep-Grade 5, which meets fortnightly. The children (and leaders) are currently very much enjoying the newly renovated Old Church space, which is now much more comfortable with its new carpet and heat pump!

This month KPC started a new topic called ‘Game On’ - a sports themed unit where our kids are learning about the Lord’s Prayer. We know that it can be hard following Jesus in our day to day lives, but when we learn to pray like Jesus did, we have a chance to plug into God’s power.

Through this unit the children will be learning the six prayer skills that Jesus  coached his disciples in when he taught them the Lord’s prayer. They will be discovering how praying about God’s character, kingdom, provision, forgiveness, guidance and protection

will turn them into prayer all-stars who can change the world with God!

Please be praying for Kids Praise Club in the following ways this month:

  • give thanks for our much more comfortable space
  • pray that the children will learn how much prayer can make a difference and grow into amazing prayer all-stars!
  • pray for wisdom for the leaders as they guide the children in discovering how to pray

Bishop's Training Event 2019

The Bishop’s Training event will be held for the third year on September 21st at the Hutchins School in Hobart. This training day is a great opportunity to connect with Christians from around the state and benefit from helpful and inspiring teaching and workshops, designed to help you grow both as a disciple and disciple-maker. This year, the focus of the day is on disciples SHAPED by word, prayer and service (part of the diocesan vision). The morning will consist of worship and talks from Bishop Richard and Stephen Carnaby (Director of Ministry Development in the Diocese), and after lunch there is the opportunity to choose two of the many workshops on offer (one being led by our very own Gabi Dunn!)

For younger attendees, there is a creche for 2-5 year olds, a programme for those in Prep-Grade 6, and an afternoon training session for those in Grades 7-12.

We would encourage you to get along to this free event if you are able. For more information, and to register (places in workshops are limited, so make sure you register soon!) go to www.bishopstrainingevent.com

Barneys / All Saints Network

A quick update on the All Saints Network: the Diocesan Council considered the proposal put to it in July and have approved Barney’s joining the network. Bishop Richard will now set a date for when that will come into effect.

If you didn’t get a chance to read the proposal in our last newsletter, then you can have a look at it here.

Serving at Barney’s

Being part of a church community means being family together, where everyone brings what they can to contribute to the whole. There are a whole lot of people who help our community to thrive in many different ways both on Sundays and throughout the week. We are so thankful to all of you, Barney’s would not be able to do all that it does without you!

If you are not yet serving in any particular way, but would like to contribute and become more involved, helping with one of our rosters on a Sunday is a great place to start.

Jobs that need covering include making coffee, operating the projector, contributing to morning tea and helping with our youngsters in Kids Praise club or Youth for Truth. Generally people are rostered on to these things no more than once a month and training is always available! If you would like to help out in this way, please speak to Liz or email her on liz@tasbarneys.org.
