July 2018 - SPECIAL REPORT - Six Senses Singapore

NEW IN SINGAPORE…

Singapore’s luxury hotel scene gets a different type of entrant with the opening of 49-room Six Senses Duxton, a boutique hotel which provides a nice alternative to many of the other choices which are much larger. The location is in one of Singapore’s trendy neighborhoods, and while the suites are small by typical standards, the design is spectacular. In this week’s issue, we give you an inside look.

1. OVERVIEW

Singapore’s newest luxury hotel is the first city hotel from Six Senses, which has a New York City property in its future. Opened in April 2018, Six Senses Duxton offers a tranquil option that combines luxury with a colonial vibe in the heart of Tanjong Pagar, the central district and Chinatown, the city-state’s version of Downtown Manhattan. The hotel combines a row of heritage trading houses that have been sustainably restored British designer Anouska Hempel (Tom Aikens restaurant, Blakes London and Amsterdam).

Wallpaper says, “Think Chinese porcelain-chip friezes, Malay timber fretwork, French windows and Portuguese shutters…Whilst the entry level rooms are calm cocoons of white and dark hues, it’s the suites that steal the show, not least the moody Opium Suite and the dazzling shimmer of the Pearl Suite.” Robb Report adds, “Guests are transported into this fairy tale with Hempel’s vivid lashings of red, gold, black and yellow against a backdrop of stylized Oriental screens, canopy beds, calligraphy wallpaper and oversized golden fans. Much of the furnishings are sourced from her personal collection.”

An Urban Redevelopment Authority Architectural Heritage Awarded blends Malay and European elements from large golden fans and accents of black, gold and yellow layered with Oriental screen and calligraphy wallpaper from Anouska’s personal collection. Its sister hotel, Six Senses Maxwell, will open this fall nearby and will offer a lap pool and boardroom. Duxton is about 20 minutes by car from both Changi and Seletar Airports.

2. ACCOMMODATIONS

There are 49 guest rooms and suites and no two are exactly the same. If you are looking for a mega suite, this is not the place, however if you appreciate stellar design, it may become a new favorite. All accommodations have individually controlled air conditioning, Naturalmat organic mattresses, bathrooms with tub or shower plus toilet, hairdryer and amenities by The Organic Pharmacy. The flat panel televisions offer satellite channels together with a Bose Bluetooth speaker. Guests have unlimited Wi-Fi, complimentary tea and coffee making facilities and bottled drinking water. Laundry service and in-room dining is also offered.

MONTGOMERIE SUITE (1)
At just 549 sq. ft. named after the Montgomerie family who originally owned the shop-houses that make up the hotel, in the 1850s, the Montgomerie Suite features a lounge area and a four-poster bed.

SKYLIGHT SUITE (2)
Located on the ground floor of the hotel, the 441 sq. ft. Skylight Suite feature a separate lounge and a light well cleverly converted into a salon. Decorated with furniture of black lacquer, it hints of the exotic past of the area.

DUXTON DUPLEX (9)
Ranging from 387 to 495 sq. ft the Duxton Duplex Suites span over two floors with a double height lounge area on the lower level and a bedroom with an ensuite bathroom on the upper level. The Suites face Duxton Road.

PEARL SUITES (3)
With the two cabinets embellished with mother of pearl in the bedroom as center pieces, the 387 sq. ft. Pearl Suites are sleekly designed with carefully selected fabrics, wood and marble, all in pearly tones. The suite features a separate lounge area and a bathroom with a bathtub.

OPIUM SUITES (9)
Designed after the opulent yet notorious opium dens that used to occupy the shop-houses in the area, the 301-387 sq. ft. Opium Suites are a modern interpretation of opium dens filled with opulence and modern comforts.

With details perfected with intricate craftsmanship and beautiful lacquerware, the room features a four-poster bed, a dining area, a lounge and a walk-in shower.

3. RESTAURANTS and BARS

YELLOW POT
Yellow Pot offers a menu around authentic and innovative Chinese cuisine based on traditional recipes with a contemporary approach. Adjacent is an antiquarian library-themed lobby bar serving up cocktails such as Escape To Kaifeng, the hotel’s signature cocktail of Tanqueray gin and chrysanthemum cordial, crowned with a yellow chrysanthemum.

4. WELLNESS and SPA

Although there is not a dedicated spa, Six Senses Duxton offers wellness activities from complimentary yoga sessions, including singing bowl meditation, twice a week at the quaint urban park behind the hotel. Guests can learn different forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine - herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage (tui na), exercise (qigong), and dietary therapy. The experience includes consultative conversation with recommendations to improve overall wellness. There are complimentary bikes available to guests to reach Duxton Plain Park, Pearl’s Hill City Park or explore nearby districts. Six Senses Maxwell will offer guests a fitness center with personal training sessions available upon request.
There will be a spa at its sister Six Senses Maxwell Hotel when it opens later this year. In the meantime there is free access to a nearby full gym with indoor swimming pool.

5. ACTIVITIES

Enjoy culture-rich Chinatown or the National Museum of Singapore, Asian Civilizations Museum, Peranakan Museum, and Singapore Art Museum. Stroll around Chinatown and be inspired by the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and its museum. With the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants in the country, particularly in the historic district of Tanjong Pagar, visit to Yixing Xuan Teahouse, or shopping at a myriad of boutiques nearby. For those looking for traditional recipes, there is Maxwell Food Center, one of the most famous in Singapore where many are second- and third-generation owners who inherited their parents’ businesses.
