A monthly newsletter of honors and accomplishments
October 2019

The Department of Medicine has launched a number of new programs to support our research community, such as the Team Science Planning Grant, PREPARE (PRE-Proposal Application REview), and NIH+, a program to provide hard money support to nearly 150 DOM researchers. Read Bob’s announcement of the initiatives and the DOM Research Program webpage for more details.

Jonathan Terdiman was named Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology at UCSF Health.

Brian Schwartz received the 2019 Society Citation Award from the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

Rebecca Sudore received the 2020 AAHPM Award for Excellence in Scientific Research in Palliative Care.

Harold Collard received the ERS Gold Medal in Interstitial Lung Disease from the European Respiratory Society.

John Fahy received the ERS Gold Medal in Asthma from the European Respiratory Society.

Neal Benowitz was interviewed on CBS News: 48 Hours discussing how nicotine was used as a murder weapon in a high-profile death that took place in 1994.

Lindsey Criswell was quoted in a New York Times article explaining the challenges of identifying Sjogren’s syndrome, resulting in huge delays in diagnosis.

Stanton Glantz was on KCBS Radio weighing in on vaping-related lung illnesses.

Krista Harrison was quoted in a Forbes article discussing the impact of home-based medical care on dementia patients.

Anil Makam was quoted in a New York Times article describing how older patients in long-term care hospitals have a lower chance of survival and recovery.

Neil Mehta was quoted in a San Francisco Chronicle article addressing some of the shortcomings of the national organ transplant network.

The Division of HIV, ID and Global Medicine hosted a press conference on Ward 86 at ZSFG with Mayor London Breed, Director of Public Health Grant Colfax, and other dignitaries to discuss the Annual HIV Report and the San Francisco Getting to Zero campaign. Key findings of the report include a reduction in new HIV diagnosis in San Francisco and markedly decreased time to viral suppression, in large part due to the expansion of the RAPID program.

Each month, we interview a member of the DOM community. Rajni Rao is a Professor of Medicine in the UCSF Health Division of Cardiology. Read her interview to learn how mentorship has helped her in her faculty career in cardiology.

The final town hall to review the results of the DOM's Culture Change Survey will be on Oct. 11 at the VA from 12-1pm. Meshell Johnson, Director of Faculty Diversity and Bob Wachter, will lead the discussion, including plans to improve our culture. Register here.

At the annual ZSFG DOM staff appreciation luncheon on September 13, the ZSFG Department of Medicine Staff Excellence Awards for Leadership, Administrative Support, Patient Care, and Research were presented to Jep Poon, Carlo Juarez, Erin Collins, Paul Couey, and Kristina Bello (pictured from left to right).
