Things to do near Ghost Mountain Ranch

Sly Park Recreation Area

1. Sly Park Recreation Area – This park has Jenkinson Lake where you can drop your boat or just swim in clear, clean water. The park has a tremendous area to hike in and the sandy beaches are great to picnic on.

Sutter Mill

2. Do you like history? How about visiting Sutter’s Mill? That is the place that basically started the California gold rush in 1849. It is now a state park that is located in Coloma, CA which is only 21 miles from Pollock Pines. Many of the homes in the area are from that era too.

3. Speaking of homes, did you know that many of the homes painted by Thomas Kincade are actual homes located in the town and area of Placerville, which is only 12 miles from Pollock Pines. There are numerous art galleries and a couple of great museums in that area for your visiting pleasure!

Red Hawk Casino

4. Do you like to gamble? Red Hawk Casino is only 17 miles away, west on the 50. If you head east on the 50, you not only will see some of the greatest scenery in the world, you will run into Lake Tahoe. It has casinos, great entertainment but the best part is the lake itself. Once again, the scenery is awesome but putting a boat on the lake is absolutley fantastic and it is only 50 miles from Pollock Pines! The water is a little on the cool side. I know I was cold, when I first went in, but you soon warm up from swimming and playing around.

Apple Hill

5. Pollock Pines is part of the Apple Hill area. There are over 85 apple farms in a 10 mile area and while October and November is the best time for that area there are still a ton of things to do at these farms for the kids and adults and great fresh vegetables are available at many different places.

6. If you like a glass of wine, there are over 20 different wineries and breweries in the area. Spend a day or two exploring how grapes become wine. Also, if you can find a place that has hard apple cider, try some.

7. There is so much history within a short drive of Pollock Pines, you will definitely find something interesting to see or do. Be sure to ask one of the employees at the park what they like and they can point you in the right (and fun) direction as many of the employees have lived up there for most of their life.

RV Safety Tips

Some things are worth repeating so here are some more ideas about RV safety and traveling tips:

1. Install a deadbolt door lock on your RV.

2. Inspect all belts and hoses for cracking especially radiator hoses. Replace as needed.

3. Check headlights, tires (air and tread) and turn signals.

4. Check any hitch or towing equipment.

5. Verify your insurance coverage.

6. Check your fire extinguishers and smoke alarms.

7.Clean your cooking vent hood to avoid grease fires.

8. Leave your itinerary with relatives or a friend in case of emergency.

On the road be sure to observe the common (but often ignored) principles of safety. Obey the speed limit, know your rig height before you go, and buckle your seat belt.

Finally, here are some tools you should always carry: flashlight, jumper cables, flat repair spray, road flares, adjustable wrench, screwdrivers, pliers, and duct tape (for temporary repairs to ruptured radiator hoses)..

RV Recipe

Cowboy Sloppy Joes

This is a simple recipe which can be adjusted if you like from mild to spicy to plain hot and spicy.

1 lb hamburger

(if you plan on feeding more make it two pounds)

1 lb roll of breakfast sausage

(buy the hot type of you want it spicier)

1 lg can of tomato sauce

(if you really want it hot, buy the El Pato yellow can of tomato sauce)

1 small can diced jalapeños

(if you want it hot)

1 medium sized onion diced

Chili powder

(5 or 6 tablespoons, can’t really tell as I just sort of shake a bunch in)

[when it is in the slow cooker use the taste test to see if you should add more]

Put the hamburger, sausage, onions, jalapenos, and chili powder in a bowl and mix them all together. Put the mixture in a skillet and fry it until the meat is cooked all the way through. Drain off any grease and put the mixture in a slow cooker, add enough tomato sauce to make the mixture moist. Cook at a low heat for a couple of hours so that the flavors have a chance to blend. Great to heat up later…Enjoy!
