In the U.S. News & World Report annual rankings, our clinical and educational programs continue to do very well, with the Department of Medicine being ranked as 3rd best internal medicine department. UCSF was the only medical school ranked in the top five in all eight of the specialty areas covered by the survey this year. Read more about the rankings here.

 RESIDENCY PROGRAM MATCH RESULTS

In the first year under new Residency Director Rebecca Berman, we had another terrific match. In addition to matching 16 UCSF students, we drew from a broad array of schools (27 in total). Fourteen of the 63 entering interns are from groups underrepresented in medicine, and 10 are in our Molecular Medicine track. See the list here.

 HOLLY SMITH MEMORIAL

On March 27, on what would have been his 95th birthday, DOM chair Bob Wachter presided over a touching memorial to our late chair Holly Smith. Speakers included former DOM chair and currently Columbia Dean Lee Goldman (pictured far right), Chancellor Sam Hawgood and Dean Talmadge King, former UCSF Chancellor and now Gates Foundation CEO Sue Desmond-Hellman (pictured 2nd to the left), and Holly's daughter Ginny Broudy, interim chair of the DOM at the University of Washington.  OTHER NEWS AND HONORS

Jeffrey Bluestone, Richard Locksley, and Arthur Weiss were named 2019 Distinguished Fellows of the American Association of Immunologists (AAI).

Daniel Calabrese received the Joel D. Cooper Career Development Award from the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.

Raman Khanna was named Program Director for the Clinical Informatics Fellowship Program.

Marlene Martin received the 2019 Young Physician of the Year Award from the National Hispanic Medical Association.

 DOM FIRESIDE CHATS

The next Fireside Chat will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 12-1pm, Room M989, Parnassus. Bob Wachter will interview Atul Butte, Professor of Pediatrics, Director of the UCSF Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute, and Chief Data Scientist of UC Health. Ari Johnson was featured in an article in The Guardian commenting on Mali's healthcare reform and its promise to provide free healthcare for pregnant women and children under five.

Andrew Ko was interviewed on KPIX 5 offering insights on pancreatic cancer treatments following Alex Trebek's diagnosis.

Margot Kushel was featured in a San Francisco Chronicle article discussing her study on the aging homeless population.

Eddy Machtinger and the UCSF Center to Advance Trauma-informed Health Care (CTHC) were highlighted in a New York Times article discussing how trauma is a key obstacle to "ending AIDS."

Carla Perissinotto was featured in a Time magazine article discussing ways in which loneliness can be reversed.

 NEWLY AWARDED GRANTS

Karin Gaensler and team: a grant of $4.2M over 1 year from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine for a project entitled, "Developing engineered autologous leukemia vaccines to target residual leukemic stem cells."

Mark Looney and team: a grant of $2.3M over 4 years from the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute for a project entitled, “Mechanisms of antibody-mediated lung injury after blood transfusion.”

Rima Arnaout and team: a grant of $2M over 3 years from the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub for a project entitled, "Multi-scale deep learning and single-cell models of cardiovascular health."
