On January 10-11, 2019, the School of Medicine (SOM) held its annual leadership retreat, focusing on fundamental science at UCSF. Participants discussed programs at UCSF to accelerate new discoveries, and identified strategies to strengthen the connections between basic science and clinical departments, and PhD- and physician-scientists. The SOM will be sharing a summary of the retreat in the coming weeks.

 NEWLY ELECTED MEMBERS TO AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR CLINICAL INVESTIGATION (ASCI)

Michelle Albert, Carolyn Calfee, and Alex Marson, pictured left to right, were elected to the ASCI, a prestigious honor society for physician-scientists.

 OTHER NEWS AND HONORS

Jessica Eng was named Deputy Associate Chief of Service for Geriatrics, Extended and Palliative Care at the San Francisco VA Medical Center.

Neda Ratanawongsa was named interim Associate Chief Health Informatics Officer at ZSFG.

Anne Rosenthal was named Medical Director of the Richard H Fine People's Clinic at ZSFG.

"End Game," a Netflix documentary about end-of-life care, was nominated for an Academy Award in the Documentary (Short Subject) category. Much of the film was shot at UCSF and features our palliative care faculty.

Uma Mahadevan was featured in an American Gastroenterological Association article discussing guidelines for how women with IBD can have healthy pregnancies.

Pamela Munster was interviewed on KQED Forum about her life on both sides of a cancer diagnosis.

Dean Ornish was interviewed on KQED Forum on how to 'undo' chronic diseases.

Sriram Shamasunder's essay on experiencing racism as a doctor of color was featured on Yes Magazine.

 DOM WOMEN'S DEVELOPMENT SERIES

The Department of Medicine launched its 2019 Women's Leadership Series for residents, fellows and faculty with an engaging session on "Communicating with Confidence and Credibility." The next session (March 8, 1-3pm, Cole Hall, Parnassus) will be on "Addressing Gender Discrimination and Microaggressions in the Workplace." Please register to attend upcoming sessions here.

 INTERVIEW WITH HARRY HAN

Each month, we interview a member of the DOM community. Harry Han is a second-year medicine resident. In the interview, he describes his parents' immigration to the U.S. from Myanmar in the 1970s and how it allowed him to pursue a career in medicine.

 STAFF AWARD: STAR PROGRAM

 NEWLY AWARDED GRANTS

Tien Peng and team: a grant of $2M over 4 years from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for a project entitled, "Maintenance of the alveolar niche in emphysema."

Sharof Tugizov and team: a grant of $1.8M over 5 years from the National Cancer Institute for a project entitled, "Role of HIV in acceleration of HPV malignancy."

Eric Collisson and team: a grant of $1.8M over 5 years from the National Cancer Institute for a project entitled, “Tailoring therapy to pancreatic cancer subtypes.”
