UCSF has received a $25 million gift from Marc and Lynne Benioff to launch a new center dedicated to predicting and developing next-generation therapies for a wide range of diseases that may relate to the microbiome. The center will be led by Susan Lynch, PhD, Professor of Medicine, in the Division of Gastroenterology. Read more about the Center here.

HONORS AND NEWS

Tung Nguyen received the Chancellor's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award.

Susan Kegeles received the Chancellor's Award for LGBTQI Leadership.

Jason Rahman was named division manager for ZSFG Cardiology and Pulmonary.

OTHER HONORS AND NEWS

Steve Hays and the post-lung transplant team received the 2019 UCSF "Voice of the Patient" Pinnacle Award by achieving the highest patient satisfaction ratings (mean score 98.2) among all outpatient clinics at the UCSF Medical Center.

Payam Nahid was named Associate Director of Clinical Trials Operations (CTO) for the UCSF Office of Research.

Arthur Weiss received the 2019 William B. Coley Award for Distinguished Research in Basic Immunology from the Cancer Research Institute.

The Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation made a $1.2M gift to the Division of Geriatrics to support the Criminal Justice and Health Program. The program, directed by Brie Williams, encourages the U.S. correctional systems to focus on health, humanity, and dignity.

FACULTY TOWN HALL: CULTURE CHANGE SURVEY RESULTS

The DOM will conduct 3 town halls (all 12pm-1pm; September 23 at Parnassus, September 27 at ZSFG, and October 11 at the VA) to review the results of last year's Culture Change Survey, administered to DOM faculty at all sites. Beth Harleman, Associate Chair for Faculty Experience, will lead the discussion, which will focus on strengthening our workplace culture. Register here.

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE TEACHING AWARDS

Era Kryzhanovskaya received the Maxine Papadakis Award for Faculty Professionalism and Respect.

Lowell Lo received the Henry J. Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching in Inpatient Care Setting.

Brian Schwartz received the Henry J. Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching in a Classroom Setting.

Mallory Johnson was quoted in a U.S. News and World Report article explaining the psychological effect of patients living with HIV.

Stephen Lazarus was featured in a story on NPR, discussing mainstay treatments for asthma, suggesting it's time to reevaluate guidelines for treating milder patients.

Surabhi Nirkhe wrote a San Francisco Chronicle op-ed addressing communication hurdles with patients without access to cellphones.

Jennifer Price and Annie Luetkemeyer were featured in an SF Weekly article, highlighting the success of UCSF’s mobile DeLiver van in treating the homeless population living with hepatitis C.

Omar Viramontes and his twin brother were featured on CBS News sharing their immigrant experience and how it has shaped their physician journeys.

Bob Wachter was quoted in a New York Times article discussing how medicine has become a more family-friendly profession, with doctors having more control over their hours.

Lisa Winston was interviewed by KQED News addressing the importance of vaccination before international travel.

NEWLY AWARDED GRANTS

Greg Rebchook and team: a cooperative agreement of $5.7M over 3 years from the Health Resources & Services Administration for a project entitled, “Providing capacity building assistance to support innovative program models in the Ryan White program.”

Rima Arnaout and team: a grant of $4.7M over 3 years from the US Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity for a project entitled, “Optimizing cardiovascular disease diagnosis for mobile deployment using advanced machine learning.”

Trever Bivona and team: a grant of $2.3M over 5 years from the National Cancer Institute for a project entitled, “Defining a new mode of RAS signaling in cancer from cytoplasmic protein granules.”
