Coming Up

From Andy and Liz…

Just a short introduction from us this month, as this newsletter is packed with lots going on, lots to think about and to pray for. Can we encourage you to make a note of the prayer points that are covered in this newsletter somewhere that will be a reminder to you when it comes time to pray, or even have the whole newsletter in front of you as you are praying? We know that prayer really does make a difference, so let’s all be people of prayer in this season.

This month we will be starting a new preaching series at Barney’s around 1 Timothy. This short letter (like Ephesians, only six chapters) has a whole lot packed in; theology as well as practical advice. We will be taking the time to work through it over the next three months. Do take the opportunity to read through the letter when you can.

I urge then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” (1 Tim 2:1-2)

Praying for the Men’s Missional Community

The Men’s Missional Community is led by Stefan Wagner and meets every Saturday morning from 9.30am for a breakfast BBQ. During the winter months they meet at Barney’s for a chance to catch up, share life, encourage and listen to one another. Thankfully there have been a number of new attendees over the past few months including international students and local non-Christians. The MC is open to any men who would like to come along and join in.

Stefan also leads a weekly huddle for four of the members of the missional community, where there is the opportunity to go deeper in their discipleship. Two of the men in this group have recently made the decision to re-engage with church, after long absences, so we give thanks for that.

Please be praying for the Men’s Missional Community in the next few weeks:

  • for a good balance of invitation and challenge; that Stefan and team would be compassionate but also challenging when necessary.
  • for more men to come along who would like to engage in the MC positively.

News…

Barneys / All Saints Network
update and where we are up to...

Firstly, thank you very much to those who attended one or more of our three consultations over the last few weeks, and also to those who have provided feedback in writing. It has been a great help hearing your comments and questions as we discern together God’s leading at this stage of our journey.

James Hornby and Andy have completed a detailed report / proposal around Barney’s joining the All Saints Anglican Network, following numerous conversations and consultations. This is a fairly lengthy document, but we would strongly encourage you to read it carefully. You can download it by clicking here.

There will be a further consultation on Wednesday 17th July at the All Saints: City (St John’s) Parish Centre at 7pm in light of this report. You are warmly invited to attend. Our Barney’s Ministry Equipper Team (Andy, Liz, Christoph, Staci, Stefan, Tommy and Gabi) also met again last week where we voted and agreed unanimously that we believe God is indeed calling Barney’s to join the All Saints Network.

This report will now be considered by the Diocesan Council on 20th July. We will keep you up to date with further developments. Please continue to hold this decision and our leaders in your prayers.

Bishops Synod Address

Synod is the name given to the governing body of the Anglican Church in Tasmania and is made up of clergy and lay (non-clergy) representatives from all Anglican Churches in the state. It meets annually in June and Bishop Richard Condie gives an address to the whole of Synod each year, reviewing the year that has been and reporting on progress towards the vision of the Anglican Church in Tasmania. This year Bishop Richard also commented on challenges to the Worldwide Anglican Communion, and Indigenous reconciliation.

You can read the full text of the Bishop’s Address by clicking here.

Serving at Barney’s

Being part of a church community means being family together, where everyone brings what they can to contribute to the whole. There are a whole lot of people who help our community to thrive in many different ways both on Sundays and throughout the week. We are so thankful to all of you, Barney’s would not be able to do all that it does without you!

If you are not yet serving in any particular way, but would like to contribute and become more involved, helping with one of our rosters on a Sunday is a great place to start.

Jobs that need covering include making coffee, operating the projector, contributing to morning tea and helping with our youngsters in Kids Praise club or Youth for Truth. Generally people are rostered on to these things no more than once a month. If you would like to help out in this way, please speak to Liz or email her on liz@tasbarneys.org.

Tim and Rebekah got married!

On a beautiful sunny June day in Sidmouth, Tim and Rebekah became Mr and Mrs Liew! It was a lovely ceremony, officiated by Andy, and the couple have since also celebrated in Malaysia with extended family. Please continue to pray for Tim and Rebekah as they start their married life together.

Andrew and Noeline are getting married!
It’s weddings galore amongst our Barney’s community this winter, as this month sees Andrew and Noeline tie the knot at Worldview on 27th July. Please be praying for them as well as they make final preparations for their special day.

Old Church Renovations Complete!

We are so excited and thankful that the renovations to our old church building have now been completed. The space is now much more inviting, with fresh paint and a brand new heat pump! We know that our Kids Praise Club will be much more comfortable in there on a Sunday, and other groups may like to use the space for other meetings as well. If you would like to see the new look, take the opportunity after our Sunday gathering this week to go inside!

From our Missionary Partner in South East Asia

Clare writes: Hello and thank you for all the emails, thoughts and prayers!

After getting a bit better every week for 7 weeks, I finally got medical clearance to come back overseas!  I have been back “home” for 5 days now, and a lot has happened in that time. I’ve moved into a room at a boarding house (kind of like a university residence) with a shared kitchen downstairs and an ensuite in each room. It’s proving a lovely haven, with the bonus of being just 400 metres away from some good friends!

I find myself more easily tired than last time, and need patience to adjust again to the heat and the different time zone. It’s been good to start and end each day with stillness and reflection – it has helped to ground me in all the upheaval of moving. I volunteered at an English kids club yesterday, and afterwards a friend commented that I seemed calm and rested. It’s so great to know that my resting from the last 7 weeks has paid off, and I look forward to being more and more fruitful!

I mentioned last email that I was helping prepare for a camp run by a local NGO. I got back just in time to attend the last day, mostly just to take photos, but it was a blast!

Besides lots of fun activities, participants of all ages engaged in thought-provoking and creative sessions on the theme, “A life full of Peace”. Near the end of the camp, a little girl in Kindy/Prep had noticed two boys bickering about something. “No, that’s not how you do it”, she said, remembering her lesson earlier, “You’re supposed to forgive him, and he’s supposed to forgive you!”

At the closing ceremony, we were all asked to write a personal commitment. It was encouraging to see that many had resolved to forgive a certain person or say sorry to someone, after learning about the power of forgiveness to bring about peace with others.

Please join me in giving thanks that I have been able to return to Asia, and move into a new home. Please pray for good re-adjustment, deepening relationships and the final material things I need for my flat."
