From Andy and Liz…

As 2019 gets underway, we are excited about strengthening our partnership and collaboration with some of the other Anglican churches in Launceston. Andy has been working closely with other ministers to create the 'All Saints Network' - a network of Anglican churches in Launceston. Over the next few weeks and months our ministry equippers team will begin meeting regularly with the leaders of the other congregations within this network, and we will be exploring opportunities for closer partnership in a number of different ways.

This network will continue to emerge over the next few months, but we're excited about opportunities to explore developing missional communities more widely across the city, to hear preaching and teaching from other ministers from within the network, and to share more of our experiences of building a discipling culture at Barney's with other Anglican communities in our city. Please be praying for this transition, and as you do so, if you have any impressions from God that you feel it would be helpful to share, please come and talk to us. Equally, if you have any questions about the network, we are happy to chat.

Over the next couple of months at Barney’s, we will be delving into the book of Ephesians, starting this coming Sunday. This will be helpful as we think about the All Saints Network, as it is a letter which has a lot to say about what life in Christ looks like, both for us as individuals, and as communities of God’s people. With only six chapters, Ephesians is not a long read. Perhaps you would like to sit down and familiarise yourself with it before we jump in this weekend.

For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. (Eph 1:15-19)

Praying for the English Language Cafe
Missional Community

The Barney's English Language cafe is a missional community that seeks to bless and serve non-native speakers of English by providing a safe and welcoming place for people to come and practice their English listening and speaking skills. Each week follows a particular theme to stimulate conversation between non-native speakers and local volunteers. As well as improving language and cultural knowledge, the cafe has become an important community to many who find themselves a long way from home. Volunteers seek to share God's love in this practical way of providing a place of belonging and community. The cafe also regularly holds social events and outings in the local area.

Erin Ring leads the cafe team and they have kicked off the year with some good planning and advertising at the university orientation week and market day. The cafe meets at Barney's on Monday evenings from 7.30-9pm and on campus on Thursdays from 4-5.30pm. If you would like to be involved as a volunteer, please email barneysenglishcafe@gmail.com

Please pray for the cafe and team as they head into 2019:

  • pray for new students who come along this year; that they will find community, be blessed and experience the love of Jesus through the cafe
  • pray for more volunteers to help out and chat with students
  • pray for the group as a whole, that it would start well and relationships develop quickly

Christoph’s Ordination

Last Saturday a number of people from Barneys travelled to St Davids Cathedral in Hobart to support Christoph as he was ordained deacon into the Anglican Church in Tasmania. This afforded us the unmissable opportunity of seeing Christoph in traditional Anglican garb (see photos)!!

The service was a great celebration of what God is doing in our state, and a wonderful opportunity to stand with those following God’s call to minister in his church. We are really thankful for Christoph, Staci and their family, and look forward to God continuing to work through them in our community.

Thank you Emily!

This month we are saying 'Thank You' to Emily Parsons as she concludes her paid role at Barney's overseeing and equipping youth ministry. Emily has led our youth work at Barney's for the last few years, and is now stepping into a full-time paid role working with young people at Launceston City Mission. We are really grateful for Emily's hard work and dedication to serving young people in our suburbs, and are also super-happy that she will remain part of our Barney's family as a volunteer leader.

From our Missionary
Partner in
South East Asia

‘Clare’ has now arrived in South-east Asia where she will be serving with Interserve. She spent the first two weeks living with an Australian couple while she began to orient herself, and has now moved into her own place.

Clare is very thankful that all her practical needs were met in the move, and that a lost bank card was found again. She is also thankful for new friends she is making there, and for all those back here in Aus who are supporting her from afar.

Please continue to pray for Clare:

- for patience and kindness for herself as she continues in ‘learning mode’

- for a sense of ‘home’ as she settles into the space and relationships

- for clarity about study (she is looking at a Masters in Education) - which course and which university.

Bring and Share lunch
Sunday 31st May

Whenever there is a fifth Sunday in the month, we like to take the opportunity for an extended time together by having a bring and share lunch after our Sunday gathering at Barney’s. This will be happening this month, on 31st March.

Please come along if you are able, and bring with you a plate of food to share. This is a great chance to get to know one another a little better and share more stories of what God is up to in our lives.

Opportunity for Baptism
Sunday 14th April

On the Sunday before Easter this year, there will be the opportunity to be baptised for any who would like to take this step in their faith. The baptisms will be held at Trevallyn Dam after our morning gathering.

If you are interested in getting baptised, or would like to know more about it, please speak to Liz or Andy in the next couple of weeks.

Introduction to Video Production
Saturday 23rd March
St John’s, Launceston

In this age of techno-centrism, it is important that the church continues to adopt methods of communicating the gospel of Jesus in ways that connect with people. With this in mind, the Anglican Diocese in Tasmania have partnered with BCA and Ridley College to provide an introductory training event on video production, led by Wayne Chan, Digital Content Producer at Ridley College. Video production equipment has been purchased by the Diocese and will be made available to church members who have undertaken the training.

If you are interested in developing skills in this area that may serve the church in the future, please check out further details here.
