On February 21, 2020, the Department of Medicine held its annual leadership retreat at the Golden Gate Club in the Presidio. This year's retreat focused on our educational mission. After a day of lively discussion, several recommendations regarding how to better support our trainees and educational staff were made; in the coming weeks, action plans will be developed around these recommendations.  HONORS AND NEWS

Gabriela Schmajuk was named Chief of the Division of Rheumatology at SFVAHCS.

Edward Hsiao was elected to the ASCI, a prestigious honor society for physician-scientists.

Peter Chin-Hong was named Associate Dean of Regional Campuses for the UME program.

 NEWLY ELECTED MEMBERS TO THE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN PHYSICIANS

Diane Havlir and Steven Deeks were elected to the Association of American Physicians (AAP). The AAP was founded in 1883 by Sir William Osler “for the advancement of scientific and practical medicine.”

 OTHER HONORS AND NEWS

Maria Dall'Era and the Division of Rheumatology received a $1M donation from Robert Bernheim to create an endowment for the Lupus Program.

Marlene Martin and team received a $3M donation from Kaiser Permanente to support the Addiction Care Team (ACT). Martin was also named one of National Minority Quality Forum’s 40 Under 40 Leaders in Minority Health.

John Chorba received the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) Young Physician Scientist Award and the Northwestern Cardiovascular Young Investigator Basic Science Award.

Jennifer Lai received the American Gastroenterological Association Young Investigator Award in Clinical Science.

Steve Schroeder was recognized through a resolution by the Society for Research on Nicotine & Tobacco (SRNT) for his long-term contributions to tobacco control and disease prevention.

Ralph Brindis was quoted in a U.S. News article regarding warning signs for coronary artery disease.

Charles Chiu was featured in a San Francisco Chronicle article discussing his work to develop a simple diagnostic test to detect coronavirus.

Julia Adler-Milstein was quoted in Time Magazine discussing policy changes that could help promote telemedicine in the face of the coronavirus epidemic.

Lisa Winston was featured in a ABC7 News article explaining ZSFG's isolation policies in light of coronavirus concerns.

 STAFF ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

 NEWLY AWARDED GRANTS

Andrew Auerbach and team: a grant of $1.5M over 3 years from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for a project entitled, “Utility of predictive systems to identify inpatient diagnostic errors: the UPSIDE study.”

Ida Sim and team: a grant of $1.2M over 3 years from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for a project entitled, “Mobile patient-reported outcomes for value and effectiveness (mPROVE).”

Matthew Spinelli and team: a grant of $1.1M over 5 years from the National Institute of Mental Health for a project entitled, “PrEP point-of-care brief-intervention for adherence among young men who have sex with men (PrEP2-BAY Study).”
