Report From The International Luxury Travel Mart

This past week I had the hardship duty of hearing on your behalf about dozens of new luxury resorts, renovated suites and villas during the International Luxury Travel Mart in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Pictured above in the lead is the finally, completely open Baha Mar resort in The Bahamas where in this issue you get a look inside the top Penthouse Suite at the newly opened Rosewood. While I have more single subject in-depth reports for future issues, this week I wanted to share some top line highlights that caught my eye and you may want to put into your consideration set for future travels.

I hope you’ll also notice the new and more modern format along with smaller type size. We’ve tested it to optimize on as many smartphone platforms as possible since that's where 90% of you read the newsletter. Let me know what you think, and hopefully enjoy the content too!

All the best,

Doug Gollan

Report From ILTM North America

1. The Rosewood Baha Mar Opens In The Bahamas

If you need evidence that good things come to people who wait, Baha Mar might be the poster child for the saying. After a bankruptcy, years of delay and a change of ownership, the resort 1,000 acre Cable Beach resort in The Bahamas has opened its third and final hotel, the Rosewood Baha Mar in addition to the Grand Hyatt and SLS

There’s a Jack Nicklaus–designed golf course, a racquet club, a Las Vegas-style casino with floor to ceiling windows, an ESPA spa, a kid’s explorers club, and over 40 dining and nightlife venues.

The Rosewood features 237 rooms, suites and villas with complete access to all of Baha Mar’s facilities. There is butler service in all rooms and over 14,200 sq. ft. of dedicated indoor and outdoor event space making it a good spot for meetings, incentives and family gatherings since Nassau has lots of good and relatively inexpensive commercial airline flights. There is also Sense, a Rosewood Spa, and salon, plus two resort pools exclusive to Rosewood guests. There’s a multitude of suites and villas, but to get you started well focus on the Penthouse Suite.

Penthouse Suite

The 11th floor three-bedroom, 2,668 sq. ft. Penthouse Suite is the Rosewood’s most spacious suite. Surrounded by tropical landscaping, the suite’s outdoor living space includes an expansive private deck with a plunge pool, fire pit and multiple seating areas and loungers positioned to take in panoramic views of the ocean. Indoors, a separate living room, dining area and full kitchen equipped with sink, four-burner stove, full-sized refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher, create a residential environment, while the three bedrooms each feature en suite bathrooms.

2. Casa del Mar’s Pacific Suite

One of my favorite Los Angeles area hotels and a great choice for those of you who like a beach base when you visit, Casa del Mar’s 1,900-sq. ft. Pacific Suite is coming off a full renovation. With views of the Santa Monica Beach, Pacific Ocean and up the California coastline, it includes two master bedrooms featuring handmade California King Begs, two fireplaces, two-and-a-half bathrooms with Italian marble, oversize living room and dining room. Your steps from the bike and running path that can take you to Pacific Palisades to the north or south to Marina del Rey and Redondo Beach.

3. Isla Bella Beach Resort Plans 2019 Opening In Marathon

Next spring, minutes from the Marathon International private airport, in the Florida keys will see the opening of the three-story residential style Isla Bell Beach Resort with 199 contemporary, coastal chic accommodations featuring unobstructed ocean views, including 92 suites that range from one to five bedrooms.

Located on Mile Marker 47, at the entryway to the Seven Mile Bridge, two hours from Miami and one hour from Key West, the resort is set on Knight’s Key, the 24-acre property offers a private white sand shoreline and views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

In addition to the beach guest will find dock fishing, Moke house cars, the IL Mare Spa, fitness classes, a full fitness center featuring Peleton equipment, five heated swimming pools, a pool bar, beach bar, multiple restaurants, fishing rods, sea kayaks, bicycles, guided fishing expeditions, bocce, croquet, volleyball, andlife-sized chess. In addition to multiple outdoor event venues, there is a 4,000 sq. ft. conference center.

4. The Lumiares Hotel & Spa’s Penthouses In Lisbon

The 1,350 sq. ft. Penthouse apartments occupy corner positions and enjoy bird’s eye views across Lisbon at The Lumiares Hotel & Spa. Each include two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a large central living area and fully fitted kitchen. They also have outside terraces with table and chairs, perfect for breakfast al fresco or an early evening drink. Wooden style floors run throughout with contemporary Portuguese tiles in the bathrooms. Conde Nast Traveller UK put it on the magazine's 2018 Hot List of new hotels and wrote, “This Lisbon hotel is a love letter to the country’s materials, craftsmanship, traditions and food. It occupies a beautifully restored, 18th-century palace in the heart of the old city, and almost every item of artwork and textile has been designed and made in Portugal. Most of the mid-century furniture comes from leading bespoke manufacturer Room 2 Fit and bedroom rugs from Ferreira de Sá.”

5.  Riviera Maya Haciendas

It’s not a hotel takeover, but it’s close, with 39 suites split across three adjacent beachfront mansion-size haciendas on Fatima Bay on Mexico’s Riviera Maya. They can be bought out individually or in total for up to 79 guests. The brainchild of bored investment banker Nicolas Boulay who now employs a team of more than 50 to oversee his current endeavor, you’ll always have your hacienda exclusive for your use at Riviera Maya Haciendas.

Hacienda del Mar, Puerto has over 16,000 sq. ft. with 15 suites with ensuite bathrooms. Hacienda Corazon is 10 suites with ensuite bathroom, a beachfront swimming pool with large deck area. Hacienda Mágica features 14 suites with ensuite bathrooms, full size private tennis court, beach front swimming pool and large deck area.

6. Hotel Lutetia Opens In Paris

Hotel Lutetia is the recently re-opened iconic landmark situated in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés area of Paris. Originally opened in 1910, the building's design was a controversial move from art nouveau to the emerging style of art deco. The Lutetia delivers an authentic Parisian experience and has been at the heart of the local community for more than 100 years. The hotel now features an eclectic mix of restaurants, bars and lounges throughout the historical ground floor including the return of the Lutetia Brasserie under the supervision of three Michelin starred chef Gerald Passedat. Akasha Holistic Wellbeing Centre is Lutetia's 7,500 sq. ft. spa dedicated to wellbeing and fitness featuring a 190 ft. long swimming pool bathed in natural daylight.

There are 47 suites and soon to be unveiled, seven individually designed signature suites. Including two penthouse suites with private access to terraces as large as 800 sq. ft. with 360 degree views of Paris.

7. Zemi Beach Anguilla

The first resort to re-open in Anguilla after the hurricanes, Zemi Beach is located on six acres adjacent to Anguilla's Fountain Cavern National Park. There’s a yoga pavilion, stand up paddle boarding, beach volleyball, snorkeling, tennis, kayaking, a kid’s club, a full spa and in addition to its restaurants and bars, private dinners on the beach. The hotel was on Travel + Leisure’s World’s 2018 Best List.

Three-Bedroom Beachfront Villas Suites

In terms of top accommodations, at the top of the food chain, there are Beachfront Villa Suites with three bedrooms features 2,826 sq. ft. located directly on the beach with private pool overlooking the water, a large living room and private terrace, fully equipped kitchen and guest bathroom.

Three-Bedroom Penthouse Suites

There’s also two 2,056 sq. ft. Penthouse Suites with three bedrooms with ocean views and 1,475 sq. ft. private furnished rooftop terraces with a private plunge pools (above), large living rooms, fully equipped kitchens and guest bathrooms.

Laucala Island in Fiji was once the playground of publishing mogul Malcolm Forbes. Now owned by Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, it is a private island resort with just 25 oversized villas bringing together high luxury and South Pacific romance in a playground of soft adventure, and even an 18-hole golf course.

Each villa is different, designed with an eye to traditional Fijian style and all come with private pools set amidst the palms of coconut plantations, white sand beaches, turquoise lagoons and lush green mountains. Those who have been are unanimous this is a “must visit” if you like islands, beaches and unique getaways with lots of activities and soft adventure.
