 | The five traits of a transformative CIO - McKinsey Digital đ˛
As technology becomes increasingly important, an organisationâs success depends on whether the CIO can move from being a functional to a strategic business leader.
For IT to become a driver of value, the transformative CIO also needs a new set of skills and capabilities that embody a more expansive role.
In working on tech transformations with hundreds of CIOs, McKinsey Digital identified five CIO traits that they believe are markers of success: 1. Business leader 2. Change agent 3. Talent scout 4. Culture revolutionary 5. Tech translator |  |  |

 | Where does most (digital) disruption come from? âĄď¸  Well, people are very mixed in their answers⌠Some say directly: 'Start-ups!â Some say, it must be âCompanies from other sectorsâ as you are the cross-industry innovation guy, some say 'for sure tech giantsâ and some say âNope, the major industry playersâ.
Letâs talk Start-ups Indeed the media loves the âDavid against Goliathâ myth, the small start-up disrupting entire sectors. And indeed there are a few start-ups who are successfully doing that. In many cases these start-ups are acquired before they really gain traction.Â
Tech Giants maybe? Then the tech giants, indeed for certain specific sectors we see great disruption.Â
Companies from other sectors, surely!? What I experience in many cases is that indeed the approaches from companies from other sectors are being implemented by the incumbents, the major industry players Major industry players (incumbents)..? So this leaves the major industry players⌠these (innovative) major players have the access to market and supply chain abilities to act at scale. The smart incumbents do the following:
- They buy or invest in start-ups, do their own venturing and are actively scouting for new opportunities
- They take an active approach to see where & how they can (not) work with the tech giants and their platforms
- They do cross-industry innovation to apply novel approaches from other sectors into their own (or adjacent) sectors
These insights are nicely outlined in the IBM Institute for Business Value report: âThe incumbents strike backâ. The report is based on conversations with more than 12,854 CxOs worldwide, of which 3457 from Europe , itâs the most comprehensive study of its kind.
So the (surprising) answer -according to IBM IBV- to the question 'Where does most (digital) disruption come from?â Is: The incumbents, the (innovative) major industry players! â
Yet, indeed most novel ideas(!) come from startups..!Â
