Part 2 - Our Dining Guide To the World's Best Hotel Rooftop and Skyscraper Restaurants Continues...

While all of the restaurants on this list are worth a visit in their own right, in putting it together I had some very specific ideas. The basic premise was to be helpful to those of you who enjoy nice dining with great views when you travel, but aren’t traveling to dine with some “must have” restaurant in mind, although there are plenty on the list.

My list is designed for those of you who are often in one place for only a couple days and trying to maximize your time. So, the first requirement was that each venue was located in a hotel. While it did not need to be a 5-star hotel as that varies from city to city, it needed to be at least 4-stars, a quality boutique or lifestyle property with worthwhile suites for you to bed down in. Some cities have a bounty of options. Others were a struggle, and in some places I couldn’t find any.

The reason I wanted to focus on hotel venues is when traveling on a hectic schedule - for business or pleasure - sometimes it’s just invaluable to be able to dine in the place you are staying. Instead of leaving a half hour or more in advance to get somewhere in traffic, hopping in an elevator and heading to the roof can be a big stress reducer, sort of like flying privately.

I wanted a rooftop, top or high-floor restaurants underscoring the word restaurant. There is no shortage of bars and lounges, but I wanted places with real dining tables and full menus, a place you can either have a personal evening or would work for business meals with partners, clients or colleagues. No dining on couches while holding small plates with people splashing you with their drinks as they squeeze by!

Lastly, I also wanted either fine or fun dining with the focus on quality, and I wanted places with great views - skylines, sunsets, oceans, rivers, pyramids, the Eiffel Tower, something memorable to go along with the food, that combined with your company or closing the deal will make the night even more memorable.

To make it all manageable for you, the list is divided into three installments, starting last week with The Americas, then this week off to Europe, Africa and the Middle East and finally Asia/Pacific. Each region is listed alphabetical by city, so it’s not a ranking, just a list of restaurants I hope you end up enjoying as you travel.

As you will see, I had some help in putting the list together, so feel free to drop me a line if you think I missed something worth adding next time around. Cheers and bon appetit!

All the best,

Doug Gollan

The Ultimate List of Hotel Rooftop and Skyscraper Restaurants - Europe, Middle East, and Africa

Sometimes you want to enjoy the city you are in, you want a good meal and a great view, but you don’t want or dont have the time to get out of your hotel and go halfway across town. In this second of three parts we profile city rooftop restaurants with haute and fun cuisine housed in hotels, so your bed is a mere elevator ride away. This issue features our list covering Europe, the Middle East and Africa, then Asia/Pacific to follow. For our Americas list, click here.

What was the criteria to be included on the list?

- Had to be a full service restaurant - not just a bar or lounge
- Had to be in a 4/5-star/lifestyle hotel with great suites you can bed down in
- Had to be rooftop or high floor with spectacular and memorable views
- Had to provide a fantastic dining experience equal to the views

1. Abu Dhabi, Rays Grill, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers

Located on Level 63, this contemporary steakhouse offers stunning 360° views of Abu Dhabi and the Arabian Gulf. Start with oysters or pan seared foie gras then Smoked Lamb Shank with Creamed Cabbage and Crispy Bacon; Beef Wellington with Truffled Celeriac Purée, Grilled Asparagus, Red Wine Sauce; or Seafood Mixed Grill of Kingfish, Lobster, Yellow Fin Tuna, Salmon, Grilled Oysters and Jumbo Shrimp.

2. Amsterdam, Ciel Bleu, Okura Hotel

Several of our contributors point us to this Dutch treat. Two Michelin stars mark Chefs Onno Kokmeijer and Arjan Speelman menus which provide a different perspective of this favorite. Guide inspectors write, "At Ciel Bleu visitors can expect a spectacle: the view of the city is fantastic and the modern elegance of the decor is a feast for the eyes. The technically accomplished chef reveals his true character, producing an astonishing variety of international cuisine, surprising in its creativity and unexpected combinations of flavors."

3. Athens, GB Roof Garden, Hotel Grand Bretagne

Michelin writes, “Set on the 8th floor of the Grande Bretagne hotel, this elegant rooftop restaurant offers spectacular views across Syntagma Square towards The Acropolis. Sunny, modern Mediterranean cooking uses fresh ingredients and is accompanied by an extensive wine list. Service is smooth and efficient.” We agree. The view is breathtaking as you look out on such historical sites. A top pick by Wine Spectator fours years in a row it is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

4. Bahrain, Re Asian Cuisine, Four Seasons

Time Out Bahrain writes, Last year, this high-end fusion Asian restaurant scooped our most prestigious accolade – Restaurant of the Year – and this year it scoops the Best Asian award. And deservedly so. Since opening, the restaurant has introduced a new kind of fine-dining to the island, with an expert kitchen team, trained by notable celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck, transforming regional classics into refined, beautifully flavoured and elegantly presented dishes. From the contemporary, 50th floor setting to the highly professional servers and buzzing atmosphere, re Asian Cuisine continues to set standards high on Bahrain’s restaurant landscape. This year, the team has also launched a leisurely Saturday brunch experience which is excellent. In general, a dining experience here is pricey, but for special occasions this restaurant comes highly recommended and is certainly one to visit.

5. Belgrade, Mama Shelter, Mama Hotel

Located on the 4th floor roof, the Mama Shelter restaurant offers a culinary experience inspired by the Serbian traditions, simple, tasty and generous.
Find its gigantic bar in the heart of the room, its opened kitchen and a wood-fired oven pizzeria. Name by Forbes as one of Europe’s best new rooftop restaurants,
its 5,000 sq. ft. terrace overlooks the city and offers an exceptional view. It also offers an outdoor bar, a giant table football, tennis table, and a spectacular braseiro.

6. Berlin, Hugos, Hotel InterContinental

The one Michelin star Hugos Restaurants on the 14th floor of Hotel Intercontinental in Berlin-Tiergarten guests will experience the perfect combination of panorma, food and service. Reserve one of three private dining rooms, each with a different view - east, west or south. West looking at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is pictured above. Choose a four, six or eight course tasting menu.

7. Berlin, SkyKitchen, Andel’s Hotel Berlin

Michelin writes, “It is worth making your way out to Lichtenberg to sample the voyage culinaire on offer on the 12th floor of Andel's Hotel. The 3- to 11-course set menu showcases a creative, modern cuisine full of contrasts with local and international influences. The setting is relaxed yet stylishly chic, and the view is wonderful. The Skybar is two floors further up."

8. Cape Town, Granary Cafe, The Silo

A pick from Embark Beyond CEO Jack Ezon, Conde Nast Traveler writes, "Colorful artworks from the collection hang in the ground floor entrance and around the hotel, including commissioned pieces by Frances Goodman, Jody Paulsen, and Pierre Carl Vermeulen. From there, you shoot up to the reception on the sixth floor and the hotel’s Granary Café, where you get an eyeful of the waterfront on one side and Table Mountain on the other through the building’s huge “pillowed” window bays by U.K. industrial designer Thomas Heatherwick. You’ll also get a sampling of the brashly eclectic interior design overseen by owner Liz Biden (think colorful silk fabrics, European and Asian antiques, African art, and industrial details)."

9. Cairo, The Roof Top, Kempinski Nile Hotel

Located on Floor 11 The Roof Top is Kempinski Nile Hotel's open air dining venue above the River Nile and positioned as the sun sets on the horizon. The menu is limited compared to other restaurants in the hotel, but there are freshly prepared mezze trays presenting local ingredients, and you can order from the menus of other restaurants in the hotel, including the specialty beef shawarma. Most of all you have the views.

10. Cairo, Revolving Restaurant, Grand Nile Tower

This is the former Grand Hyatt now trading as Grand Nile Tower and it offers some of the best views you will find of Cairo. It rotates 360 degrees in 75 minutes, bringing the Pyramids, the Nile River and the entire city into view. It offers French cuisine with a show kitchen.

11. Cairo, Upper Deck, Four Seasons Nile Plaza

With table seating and a menu that includes salmon filet, sea bass with lemon butter sauce, surf and turf and a full sushi bar as well as sandwiches and salads, despite its name, Upper Deck Lounge makes our restaurant list with its floor to ceiling glass windows and rooftop views.

12. Copenhagen, Sticks’n’Sushi, Tivoli Hotel

Situated on top of Tivoli Hotel & Congress Centre in Central Copenhagen, this large restaurant, with stunning views, a rooftop terrace and cocktail bar, can accommodate groups up to 85 people for dinner. On the casual and fun side of the dining spectrum, Sticks'n'Sushi also has a wide range of meat, from free-range chicken, veal and wagyu beef to sustainably caught fish and organic pork. They also make vegetarian and vegan food and use as much organic produce, as they can. The hotel has some decent suites, and is modern, not luxury, but good if you are there for a night and want fun place to host your Danish team or partners.

13. Copenhagen, Sukaiba, AC Hotel Bella Sky

On the 23rd floor, 76 meters above ground level, restaurant and bar Sukaiba Copenhagen is a new restaurant and bar experience in 2018 based on sustainability and local ingredients. 14. Doha, Al Matbakh, Arumaila Boutique Hotel

Part of Bill Heinecke’s Minor Hotel Group, the Arumaila Boutique Hotel is host to this rooftop Indian restaurant which offers sunset views of Doha’s skyscraper filled skyline in the new Souq Watif complex. Qatar Living recommends, "Nalli Nahari, lamb shanks braised in old Delhi spiced gravy, which had been cooking to perfection for six hours prior to our arrival.” It says, "Overall, Al Matbakh is the North Indian experience you’ve been looking for. You will get all the old favorites with a few new items. The menu is simple and effective, and each dish is crafted with passion that translates into the flavor.”

15. Doha, Zengo, The Kempinski Residences

Inspired by the world travels of Chef Richard Sandoval and the ancient spice routes from Asia to the Far East, Zengo’s menu offers a unique spin on authentic Pan-Asian cuisine. The menu ranges from sushi, sashimi and hand-crafted dim sum to curry dishes, grilled entrees, and wok dishes. Hand-muddled mocktails, with a focus on Asian flavors, complement the diverse menu. I Love Qatar writes, "Zengo is an Asian inspired restaurant located on the 61st floor (with) panoramic views of the sea and Doha cityscape. The menu offers a large variety of Asian dishes including sushi, tempura, dim sum and stir fries. The dumplings are a popular item!"

17. Dubai, Mix by Alain Ducasse, Kempinski Emerald Palace

Mary Gostelow of The Gostelow Report says, "An impressive and stunningly beautiful place to dine, both in the setting and food presentation." Mix by Alain Ducasse pays tribute to the local produce. Surprisingly perhaps, it’s the first restaurant of the famous chef in the United Arab Emirates and also the largest in his restaurant group. It is zoned to create an intimate, welcoming atmosphere. Spread over three floors, guests have an option to enjoy al fresco dining on the sixth floor rooftop, surrounded by views of the sea and The Palm Jumeirah. There is a private chef’s table hidden from view in the central dome of the Palace, where you ascend in a private elevator.

18. Dubai, Prime68, JW Marriott Marquis

21. Florence, B-Roof, Baglioni Grand Hotel

On the fifth floor of the Grand Hotel Baglioni you can find the restaurant B-Roof, where you can enjoy haute cuisine with a panoramic view of Florence's skyline. You will feel like you can almost touch Brunelleschi's dome and Giotto's Tower. The restaurant is also the ideal setting for events of all kinds, especially receptions, ceremonies and weddings, thanks to the versatility of the spaces, the multi-level terraces, the trellises and the typical wrought-iron balustrades. Blogger Wandering Eater writes, "The food satisfied my stomach and craving for Tuscan fare. The service was very courteous and friendly. But the thing that really takes this experience to another level were my eyes being fed by the marvelous vistas from my table and the unparalleled views of Florence if you are able to go to the outdoor terrace."

22. Florence, SeSto, Westin Excelsior

Michelin says, "Situated on the sixth floor of the Westin Excelsior hotel, this modern, designer-style restaurant is the jewel in the hotel's crown. While the view of Florence through the large windows is stunning enough in winter, in summer the superb terrace gives guests the impression of flying above the city. Imaginative cuisine with robust flavors created by an experienced and highly skilled chef. Ive stayed at the hotel. Its a solid choice.

23. Geneva, Izumi, Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues

Geneva is turning Japanese at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues over Izumi, its rooftop Nippon restaurant with picture perfect views of Mont Blanc, the old city, its eponymous lake and the gurgling Rhone River directly below. While the city has strong competition in the luxury hotel sector, the rooftop view is definitely a point in favor of staying here.

24. Hamburg, Heritage Restaurant, Le Meridien

Chef Rasmus Schulte Rahde and his team serve steaks, fish. Michelin inspectors say, "Heritage offers a fantastic view of the River Alster and appetizing cuisine to boot. Crowning The St. Regis Istanbul, Wolfgang Puck’s Spago restaurant combines stunning views of Maçka Park and the Bosphorus with a warm, contemporary design and original artwork. 30. Johannesburg, View, Four Seasons The Westcliff

The Four Seasons Hotels The Westcliff makes our list for its elevated hillside position. A suburban 5-star hotel View (and Flames below) both offer incredible 240-degree views of the city. The seasonal menu offers refined and honest contemporary cuisine – a richly satisfying experience with delicacies like crayfish and foie gras. View’s urban chic interior opens out onto a sunset terrace, where diners can take in sweeping views of vibrant Johannesburg.”

31. Johannesburg, Flames, Four Seasons The Westcliff

34. Lisbon, Rossio, Altos Avenida Hotel

We found Rossio via Lindsey Ueberroth, the CEO of Preferred Hotels & Resorts. Forbes writes, "The rooftop restaurant at the Altis Avendia hotel is worth a visit for the rooftop views over the beautifully tiled square of Restauradores. If weather allows (it usually does), insist on a table on the terrace. Chef João Correia is proud of the fact that his robust, rustic cuisine is inspired not by fine dining but by his grandmother’s cooking in the central province of Ribatejo. There’s no use of liquid nitrogen or spherified anything, just a desire to feed people well."

35. London, Aqua Shard, Shangri-la

Aqua Shard is not actually part of the Shangri-la hotel, but it is in the same building, thus it makes our list. Located the 31st floor, the restaurant serves innovative contemporary British cuisine paired with spectacular London views. Gayot writes, “Aqua Shard offers views over London from the 31st floor of Europe's highest building, and an interior done in a purple and grey color scheme with comfortable banquettes covered with Liberty print. 37. London, Radio Rooftop, ME Hotel

Blogger Heroine in Heels reports, "Radio is a rooftop restaurant bar above the ME Hotel. It’s got a bit of a reputation of the kind of place where the cool kids hang out. Leggy blondes taking Instagram photos, and men in Gucci slippers sipping champagne in the sun. However for all its cool kid vibe, it’s surprisingly welcoming for us regular folk. This mix is perfect though, as it means I get to indulge in a bit of people watching.  Aside from the views, there is a variety of Mediterranean inspired dishes.

38. Milan, Ristorante Armani, Armani Hotel

Open during the summer months, The Terrace is one of Munich’s best-kept secrets for al fresco dining or sip cocktails. The newly redesigned terrace features a lounge area with a bar. With Oriental statues and large potted plants, the blue and turquoise design mixes chic Asian touches with a Mediterranean look and feel. Guests will be able to enjoy a menu featuring a mix of Asian, Latin American and Mediterranean delicacies, whilst taking in the stunning view, showing everything from the twin domes of the Munich Cathedral to the undulating Alpine horizon.

42. Munich, Brunch in the Sky, Hilton On The Park

43. Nairobi, The View, Movenpick Hotel & Residences

With a name like The View you know this has to either be a talk show or restaurant that offers some very impressive perspectives. Movenpick's revolving restaurant on the 24th floor offers 360-degree vistas of the Kenyan capital while you enjoy traditional Swiss specialities. A variety of fondues and veal zurichoise with crisp white table cloths and immaculate settings will make you think you might be in Zurich.

45. Paris, L’Oiseau Blanc, The Peninsula

The Gostelow Reports Mary Gostelow gives us LOiseau Blanc located on the 6th floor of The Peninsula Paris. The restaurant offers French cuisine, highlighting the best national products hand-picked everyday at the market. Each week there is a new menu inspired by seasonal ingredients. The aviation-themed interior celebrates flying aces Charles Nungesser and François Coli who attempted to cross the Atlantic in 1927 from Le Bourget.

46. Porto, The Yeatman, The Yeatman Hotel

Of this two star Michelin restaurant, CNN reports, "Chef Ricardo Costa creates tasting menus that are a contemporary interpretation of traditional Portuguese flavors, and his dishes are always ideal for pairing with The Yeatman's vast collection of local wines.” Michelin adds, "This stylish restaurant has a bright decor combining the classical and the contemporary, as well as phenomenal views of Oporto across the river. The young chef conjures up innovative cuisine showcased via several menus, with dishes based around seasonal ingredients and a superb balance of flavors. The wine cellar is one of the best in Portugal."

47. Prague, Zlata Praha, InterContinental Hotel

Zlatá Praha at the Intercontinental Hotel Prague offers spectacular views over the city by day and a more intimate candlelit atmosphere after sunset. Executive Chef Roman Dolejs and his team use the freshest ingredients available, all sourced from local suppliers. Highlights include a candlelit dinner overlooking the city and Sunday Brunch. Come at sunset for amazing views.

48. Reykjavik, Grillio, Radisson Blu Saga Hotel

Michelin says, "Located at the top of (the Radisson Blu Saga Hotel); the unusual ceiling depicts the zodiac signs but it's the 360° views that will steal your attention, especially at sunset. The young team deliver an array of ambitious Nordic dishes with clear flavors."

49. Rome, La Pergola, Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria

Heinz Beck’s three Michelin star La Pergola in the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria offers stunning views of the of Rome in a classically decorated dining room. Andy Hayler, the only person to have eaten in all Michelin three star restaurants in a single year says, “Fagotelli carbonara is the restaurant signature dish, and was as good as ever, the liquid filling of the pasta delightful, the seasoning precise. Black cod mash with celery infusion and crust was also excellent, the fish beautifully cooked and the celery having deep flavor.” He adds, “Service was superb from start to finish, as polished as you could wish for.” If you are an oenophile, he notes the wine cellar contains 65,000 bottles of wine, with 3,500 different labels offered on the list.

50. Rome, Le Terrazza, Hotel Eden

A favorite with several of my expert helpers, Le Terrazza brings Michelin star fine dining and spectacular views. Chef Fabio Ciervo is focused on fresh produce and herbs in his bold and native cuisine. Guide inspectors write, "Sitting in the modern, elegant dining room of La Terrazza, your attention is drawn to the spectacular roof-garden restaurant overlooking the city's rooftops. Also competing for your attention is the creative and original cuisine which has a hint of local flavor, although the main influence here is the chef's imagination."

51. Rome, Mirrabelle, Hotel Splendide Royal

Directional Aviation Chairman Kenn Ricci brings us this gem. Michelin writes, "Boasting stunning views from the 7th floor of the Hotel Splendide Royal, Mirabelle offers a selection of local specialities in an elegant setting. An impressive wine cellar includes a range of Italian and international bottles. The Mirabelle has one of the most elegant gourmet terraces in Rome, and in summer, the panoramic terrace transforms into a gorgeous roof garden that offers open-air dining with spectacular views."

52. Rome, Imago, Hassler Roma Hotel

Recommended to us by Ted Teng, CEO of The Leading Hotels of the World, CNN reports, "Perched at the top of the Spanish Steps, this luxury hotel has an unsurpassed view of Rome. The same view is also available from the hotel's Michelin-starred restaurant Imàgo, located on the sixth floor, which just celebrated its 10th anniversary. Naples-born chef Francesco Apreda pays tribute to his experience working in Japan with dishes like blue lobster with hijiki seaweed salad and Parmesan cheese, or risotto with red chicory, Robiola cheese and coriander seeds. They all combine traditional Italian cuisine with flavors of the East."

53. Venice, Terrazza Danieli, Hotel Danieli

Known as one of city's most important landmarks, Hotel Danieli is a patrimony of Venetian excellence. Set on Riva degli Schiavoni, the Luxury Collection property dominates the lagoon and is just steps away from the Bridge of Sighs and the famous monuments of Piazza San Marco. The rooftop restaurant, Terrazza Danieli, is a staple for locals and tourists alike. The venue boasts spectacular views of the Grand Canal complemented by the finest traditional Italian cuisine. Michelin’s inspectors say, “This restaurant boasts breathtaking views of Venice. As is fitting in this historic city, which has long acted as a crossroads between East and West, the menu blends local dishes with exotic spices and flavours. Pleasant alfresco dining on the terrace in summer."

54. Vienna, Le Ciel by Toni Morwald, Grand Hotel

Michelin writes of its one star appointment at the top floor of the Grand Hotel Wien, "The atmosphere up on the seventh floor is classically elegant and, quite naturally, the best tables are those on the roof terrace. The kitchens serve distinctive and creative food made using the best quality produce. Attentive service.
