| Unsubscribing from our Newsletter: | |
| There is a link at the bottom of this newsletter that allows you to unsubscribe from it. I don’t know all the individual parent addresses for our 2017 year six graduates, and some of those parents still have children here, so it is easiest if parents manage unsubscribing for themselves. Thanks.

| Calendar of Events - Term 1: | | |
| 2017 was an awesome year with many achievements to be proud of. One of our best was achieving a Five Year ERO Review for the first time in our school’s history. It’s very satisfying to have such positive independent validation of what we are doing, why we are doing it and the way we are doing it. Gaining that recognition is down to the quality and commitment of our WHS whanau - each one is a treasure. | |
| |
| Our strength is in our people and the people we have been able to bring into our team are all wonderful, caring, talented and passionate people. In total we have five new whanau members and we will introduce them all next week. It was sad but also satisfying to see our year six graduates leave us. They are truly fine young people we rightfully feel so proud of, and have so much hope for. They leave us with the skills, attitudes and dispositions to be successful and happy - and that is our dearest wish for them all. | |

| Rooms 24, 22, 23 and 25 organised a Christmas collection for the Auckland City Mission at the end of last year. A huge vote of thanks to our community for your awesome generosity. ACM collected our huge pile of gifts and were absolutely delighted with the thoughtfulness and variety of gifts provided. You all made a big difference for a great many families and we sincerely thank you. Another very successful Western Heights “Pay It Forward Class Project” completed. | |
| | After lots of professional learning, planning, discussions and preparation, we finished off our last week before school started with a team building day, kayaking from Puhoi to Wenderholm. It was the perfect way for our five new staff to get to know us, and us them, and for all our existing staff to get to know each other a bit better too. | | |
| |
| It was heaps of fun, and as a sponsored event, it didn’t cost us or Western Heights, so even better. | |
| At top right is a picture we found showing our whole school in 1979 - about 160 people and that includes staff. We finished 2017 with almost 700 children, and a huge mix of nationalities - in both our staff and our children. Even so, we remain a closely connected, caring family where every child feels they belong and are special. Evidence of that diversity and unity can be seen in the second picture at right. It was a gift from one of our parents. Her dad painted it for us. He is a scholar of Chinese history and took an aspect of Confucian teaching that represents “Love to Learn to Lead.” This says a lot to me. It’s a precious symbolic gift. It’s an indication that our community cares and feels a part of our school. It shows our new Western Heights values and vision are actually ancient, if not timeless, and tie in to universal human values and principles. It reminds us of the importance of community and ensuring all in our community are made to feel welcome, at home and given the chance to connect and contribute. It also provides a segue into Chinese New Year which we will be celebrating at Western Heights on Friday 16 February. | |
| |
| Friday 16 February is also our first Whanau Time for the year. Everyone is welcome and we would love to see lots of parents and extended family there - especially grandparents, as their place in Chinese New Year tradition is important. Come dressed in traditional Chinese clothing or costume if you have this, otherwise wear red or gold colours as they are traditional Chinese New Year celebration colours. | |

| We began with a Powhiri for all our new children and new staff. We are blessed to have Nancy Matana join us as our new Kapa Haka coordinator from 2018 on. A fond farewell to Trish Ripi who is back at University this year completing her studies. What used to be our library is now an amazing FLE (Flexible Learning Space) for three New Entrant classes - rooms 27, 28 and 29. It is set up for our Walker Learning Approach. | |
| |
| We have Annette Pram in 29, Tanya Boyd in 28 and Sharnie Hill in 27 all team teaching together. This space is just the most awesome, sensory-stimulating, language-stimulating, learning-stimulating environment New Entrants could hope for. It ensures a much more seamless transition from Early Childhood Centres and Kindergarten and allows us to employ a learning approach that will help our children learn and grow academically as well as socially, in the best way possible.
Room 3 is now also a shared space - rooms 2 and 3 - with Julie Grant and Jennece Morris team-teaching together.
| Also at the start of the year I am meeting with each class and sharing with them the story and meaning behind each of our five Pōhatu Tūmu - our cornerstone value rocks. These rocks represent the really big values our school is built upon and it is important for our children to grow their understanding and appreciation of these values. All of the key things we do such as Pay It Forward etc, tie in to at least one of these stones. | |

We have three specialist Learning Leaders at WHS - Jessie and Dana Taylor in Literacy, and Aaron McGreal in Culturally Responsive Pedagogy.

| | Tuck Shop Update: Due to low sales figures early in the week, our Tuck Shop was only going to open on Thursdays and Fridays this year. It was a huge financial challenge to be open more days. BUT.… wait there’s some good news. The feedback from hungry children, busy parents and starving staff has meant Julie and Kathryn will trial opening Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this term. It is up to us to use this service where we can so they stay viable and stay open.
You know what they say, “use it or lose it” and many of us would hate to lose this valuable service.
eMail Addresses and Cell Numbers We need you to keep us up to date with your email addresses and your cell phone numbers. These are vital ways for us to keep in contact - especially in an emergency. Please make sure you let us know of changes immediately they happen. Thanks.

| | My Principal’s Blog can be found at - https://goo.gl/K5JkWZ The last post was about Believing in Kids and this is the feedback we received on that post. "What a wonderful blog. I was moved to tears because it brought up memories of teachers who cared enough to take me to one side and suggest I try doing things just a bit differently. Those moments remain with me through my life. I wanted to prove to them that I was worth the time they took and their belief in me.” Suraya Dewing (The Story Mint) | | |
