Silversands Grenada

One of the things I enjoy about the Caribbean is its diversity, each island a bit different than the next and a wide variety of cultures, languages and terrain. Grenada is known as the spice island, but it also has some of the region’s best beaches, one of which is home to the new $125 million Silversands resort, which also features a spectaculars villas and suites with a beautiful modern aesthetic. It’s also the subject of our Special Report in this issue.

All the best,

Special Report:  Silversands Grenada

1. Overview

Silversands Grenada has been on virtually every list of most anticipated luxury hotel openings over the past two years leading up to its delayed opening in December. However, the old saying about good things coming those who wait may be appropriate.

The Telegraph calls it “a luxurious hotel where everything has been designed in a strikingly minimalist style. It backs onto Grenada's best beach (Great Anse), and has an impressively long swimming pool, an elaborate spa, soothing, high-tech bedrooms and vast, indulgent villas with private pools.” The San Francisco Examiner put Silversands on its bucket list of places to visit for 2019.

Michael Holtz, CEO of luxury travel agency SmartFlyer who just visited says, ““Silversands Grenada is truly one of the most impressive openings I have seen in quite some time. The quality of build out is on par with the best New York City condos, coupled with great food, and a stylish staff that offers genuine Caribbean hospitality. I cannot wait to return.”

The resort is the vision of Egyptian telecom magnate and billionaire Naguib Sawiris (ranked #7 in Africa, #550 in the world by Forbes) who when he saw the property called it “love at first sight.” The Telegraph notes, "Eclectic, original pieces of art, bought specially for the hotel by Mr. Sawiris, inject individuality and colour: outside the lobby entrance stand two giant wicker statues, bowing slightly as if formally greeting guests, and upright canoes painted with images of exotically dressed women, fishermen and cartoon cats."

Out of the gate, Silversands was accepted to The Leading Hotels of the World and also Virtuoso, a network of luxury travel agencies that has a preferred list of hotels. Built at a cost of $125 million, it is located on Grand Anse Beachwith over 700 feet of beachfront and a 330 feet long swimming pool. There is a full spa, beach club with resident DJ and two full service restaurants, Asiatique and the Grenadian Grill, the latter drawing on Grenada’s fresh seafood and its reputation as the spice of the Caribbean.

Paris based AW2 whose credits include Six Senses Con Dao and Alila Villas in Vietnam to the Patek Philippe Salon in London has brought a stunning modern aesthetic that alone will ensure Silversands makes numerous best lists. So far, the service reviews both from Holtz and other visitors are showing the resort has hit the ground running and doesn’t have any of those snafus that often plague hotels right after they opening.

Not surprisingly, there aren’t a lot of reviews yet – only 12 on Trip Adivsor – 11 excellent and one very good which equates to a five star rating. Guests recommend the third and fourth floors for better views.

Located in the southern tip of the Lesser Antilles Islands in the south-eastern Caribbean Sea, Grenada is a former British colony known for its spices. It is located northwest of Trinidad and Tobago and southwest of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The surrounding islands shelter it from high waves, strong currents and winds. You’ll find mountainous terrain, waterfalls, lakes, hot springs, rain forests and boasts over 45 beaches stretch its coastlines, so there is plenty to do outside the hotel.

2. Accommodations

Silversands offers 43 suites and nine villas dotted along Grand Anse Beach. Each are designed to create a series of indoor and outdoor spaces to take advantage of the spectacular beachfront, gorgeous vistas, and good weather.
