January 2020

2019 was another year of great accomplishment by the faculty, trainees, and staff of the UCSF Department of Medicine (DOM). In the coming decade, teamwork and collaborations will be increasingly important in a rapidly changing health and healthcare environment. Read here for Bob Wachter's thoughts on the state of the DOM, with a particular focus on areas in which teamwork and collaborations are essential.

 OTHER HONORS AND NEWS

Rupa Marya was appointed to the Healthy California for All Commission by Governor Newsom to help guide issues around healthcare access in our state.

Paul Blanc was quoted in a U.S. News article addressing the harmful effects of skin-lightening creams containing organic mercury.

Stanton Glantz was quoted in a San Francisco Chronicle article regarding the effects of vaping on respiratory health.

Jeffrey Gotts appeared on PBS News Hour commenting on recent vaping-related illnesses.

Rachel Rutishauser was highlighted in a San Francisco AIDS Foundation article regarding a first-of-its-kind HIV study that will begin at UCSF in 2020.

Rupal Shah was quoted in a Yahoo News article addressing the potential danger of hard-metal pneumoconiosis in vaping users.

Sriram Shamasunder shared his journals from Burundi and Rwanda in Panorama: The Journal of Intelligent Travel.

Michael Steinman was quoted in a San Francisco Chronicle article discussing the importance of deprescribing medications for patients taking too many meds.

 SPECIAL EVENT: A CONVERSATION WITH DAVID SHULKIN

In our next Fireside Chat on Monday, January 13, from 12-1pm at HSW-301, Parnassus, Bob Wachter will interview David Shulkin, former VA Health Secretary (famously fired by Pres. Trump) and author of It Shouldn't Be This Hard to Serve Your Country: Our Broken Government and the Plight of Veterans.  CTHC PARTNERSHIP WITH CA SURGEON GENERAL

The UCSF Center to Advance Trauma-informed Healthcare (CTHC) has signed a $10.7 million contract with the California Department of Health Care Services to lead the California Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Learning and Quality Improvement Collaborative (CALQIC) in California’s ACES Aware initiative. CALQIC will be co-directed by UCSF's Anda Kuo, Marguerita Lightfoot, and Edward Machtinger.

 TEAM SCIENCE PLANNING GRANT WINNERS

The DOM's first-ever Team Science Planning Grant was awarded to Elaine Ku (Nephrology-UCSF Health) and Jennifer Lai (Gastroenterology-UCSF Health) for their project entitled, “Prediction of end-stage renal disease risk among patients with liver failure.” The team will receive $100K to support the planning for a new grant submission.

 NEWLY AWARDED GRANTS

Elaine Ku and team: a grant of $3.5M over 5 years from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases for a project entitled, “Reaching equity for adults and children in transplant.”

Feroz Papa and team: a cooperative agreement of $3M over 4 years from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases for a project entitled, “Partial antagonists of IRE1 RNase - 'PAIR's - to treat Type 1 diabetes.”

Vasanth Vedantham and team: a grant of $2.4M over 1 year from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute for a project entitled, “A regenerative approach to cardiac pacing.”
