From Andy and Liz...

During June, we wrapped up our series on Spiritual Formation. This has been a really helpful look at what it means to engage with “the process of being formed into the image of Christ for the sake of others.” Andy finished off this series for us by looking at the invitation of Jesus found in Matthew 11:28-30 where he asks us to come to him, be yoked with him, learn from him and find rest with him. Andy also shared with us a few resources that might be helpful as we seek to engage further in practices that can aid our spiritual formation. His two-fold suggestion was that we do what we like (i.e. discover or continue to engage with God in the ways that come naturally to us) and to do what we don’t like (i.e. have a go at some practices which may not come naturally, but which God could really use to form us further).

Details of all those resources are on our website at www.tasbarneys.org/news. Please do take time to have a look and perhaps choose one or two practices to engage with over the next weeks and months as we all seek to allow God to form us more into the image of Christ for the sake of others and be God’s Missionary People, Seeing Lives Transformed.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matt 11:28-30 MSG)

Praying for Barney’s Kids Praise Club

Barney’s Kids Praise Club is a fortnightly gathering of our children in grades Prep-6. They meet in the Old Church and, led by a wonderful team of adults dedicated to growing the faith of the next generation, learn about the Bible and consider what it means for their lives, whilst also having some fun!

This year we have been using resources produced by Scripture Union, called X-Stream which have lots of ideas for engaging with the Bible, including dramas, crafts, puzzles and discussion starters.

We started off this year looking at Jesus’ interactions with various people in the gospels, and what they tell us about God’s love, forgiveness and acceptance. We then moved to the Old Testament where we have been learning about God’s faithfulness through the stories of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Next term we will be focussing on the gospel of John and how Jesus shows us God’s love.

It has been a privilege to see our children engaging with these ideas with fun and enthusiasm, and reflecting on how they might be relevant to their own lives. We also have a cohort of upper-primary children who we would love to disciple further and in new ways next year. If you have a passion for encouraging the faith of our younger members and would like to join the Kids Praise Club team, please speak to Liz Goodacre, or email her on liz@tasbarneys.org.

It would be great if you are also able to pray for Kids Praise Club, particularly in the following ways:

  • Pray for faith to grow and that our children will be rooted and established in God’s love
  • Pray for those children who sometimes find it hard to engage; that their desire to know more of God would grow, and for the leaders as they encourage them
  • Pray for the older children in KPC; that there would be opportunity to disciple them further next year.
  • Pray that the renovations to the Old Church can be completed quickly and smoothly so that it is a more comfortable space.

11th August - Tasmanian Bible Forum
St Johns, Launceston, 2-5pm

How important is using your imagination for the way you live your Christian life?

Some might say that the human imagination is the opposite of God’s truth: “Let the Scriptures cease to be heard and soon the remembered Christ becomes an imagined Christ” (James Smart). Others, that imagination is central to the faithful life: “If we wish to have transformed obedience … then we must be summoned to an alternative imagination” (Walter Brueggemann).

What does the Bible say about imagination? And how might we use our imagination to glorify God? Presented by Graham Stanton, Practical Theology Lecturer at Ridley College.

If you are on facebook, you can register your attendance here.
