Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Community Members:

The school board and a group of engaged parents had a very productive meeting yesterday afternoon.  With the adoption of elementary and middle school redistricting last spring and the upcoming adoption of high school redistricting this spring, many students will be changing schools over the next couple years.  While we hope most parents and students will be excited for the changes, we realize there will be instances when parents may need their children to stay in a particular school.

The parents, educators, principals, school board and staff worked hard to craft guidelines to help in the redistricting transition.  We know we won’t be able to please everyone, but this team of dedicated people came up with common sense guidelines that should ease many minds.

I’ve attached the draft versions of those guidelines.  Please note that there are two separate documents—one for residents served by Heights schools and the other for residents for all other areas.  The board will make final recommendations at the next meeting, but I don’t anticipate any major changes.  I welcome your thoughts on the guidelines.

High School Redistricting

The high school redistricting committee meets again Tuesday (February 9) at 6:00 pm in the Lincoln Center board room.  The committee will be discussing various options and reviewing information that will assist them with their recommendations to the Board of Trustees in the coming weeks.  This is also a great opportunity to make your voice heard.

If you haven’t had a chance to read it, I encourage you to read the guest opinion regarding redistricting I wrote for the Billings Gazette at the end of January.  You can read the article by clicking here.

I hope to see you on Tuesday.

Sincerely,

Terry Nelsen Bouck
