From Andy and Liz...

If you have been at our Sunday gatherings in the last few weeks you will know that we are now in the middle of a series of talks on Spiritual Formation. Spiritual formation is about is about how we become more and more Christlike in our walk with Jesus. We have based the talks around a definition of Spiritual Formation which says it is, “the process of being formed into the image of Christ for the sake of others.” All the elements of this sentence are worth considering carefully. Spiritual formation is a process; it doesn’t happen overnight but rather is a journey of which accepting Jesus as saviour is only the beginning. It is a process of being formed; it is not we who strive to make ourselves into the image of Christ, but rather we allow Jesus to do the forming. There are certain things we can do to help the process along, but ultimately it is he who is doing the work, not us. Becoming more like Jesus is the goal of spiritual formation, but not so that we are simply pleased with ourselves, rather, so that we can bless others.

The author who penned the above definition of Spiritual Formation is Robert Mulholland and he talks about it in his book Invitation to a Journey. It is a worthwhile read, and would be a great companion to these Barney’s talks. The book is available through Koorong, or speak to Andy if you’d like to borrow his copy! Worldview is also offering a short course on Spiritual Formation in July, which is a great opportunity to dig deeper into some of these ideas (see details below). And don’t forget that all of our talks are available to listen to again via our website, so you never need to miss out on them!

Praying for the Men’s Missional Community

The Men’s Missional Community is led by Stefan Wagner and exists to bless and serve men in the local area by providing a place for real, honest relationships and community where they can grow in Christ.

The community meets for a BBQ breakfast every Saturday morning from 9.30am. In the summer months they meet at the heritage forest, but through the winter they will meet at Barney’s each week.

There is a good mix of Christians and non-Christians in the group, and Stefan meets with some of the men during the week as well, either one to one or in a huddle. It is also an opportunity for men to get to know people and ask questions before they join in with wider Barney’s gatherings.

In our society which is often isolated, and where men can sometimes struggle to find honest relationships with other men, the Men’s MC offers the chance for authentic community and a safe place to ask questions about life and faith. It has been encouraging to see how principles of generosity and discipleship are learned by example and reproduced.

In the next month or two, please be praying for the Men’s MC in the following ways:

  • praise God for the way that people in the group want to be generous and contribute to their gatherings
  • pray for contact with more men, and that it will be offering something that is relevant and so grow as a community
  • pray for wisdom for Stefan as he leads the MC

If you are a man who would like to check out the Men’s MC, please come along on a Saturday morning, or speak to Stefan Wagner.
