Scoop!
Notes from Paco

Happy New Year, !

As a kid growing up in the 70’s, my happiest memories were the times when my parents would take me and my sister to the Magnolia ice-cream parlor along Aurora Boulevard. I vividly remember often sitting at the “bar” as most of the tables were usually taken. Restless youngster that I was, I couldn’t wait to rush outside and run helter skelter all over the spacious lawn in front of the shop.

My favorite order was that one scoop of vanilla topped with heavenly strawberry syrup.

When our family moved from the (then) quiet Loyola Heights neighborhood to Greenhills, I discovered Coney Island! Coney Island was like heaven to me as it had 32 flavors (one more flavor over Baskin-Robbins’ 31 as I was to learn later) all laid out in their sweet glory to tempt and tickle customers. It was the first time I saw ice-cream displayed this way in such a dazzling manner.

I fell in love with bubblegum, and would try no other – until the time I tried what Dad would order – butter pecan.

When I moved to the US in 1979, I met Ghirardelli! As I got older, my taste in ice-cream kept being raised, bar after bar. I would take the bus every Saturday to indulge in my, then delicious habit, two scoops of vanilla ice-cream with butterscotch!

Now, when I visit Ghirardelli, I can hardly finish a one scoop vanilla sundae with butterscotch.

When I was working for UPS (United Parcel Service) as a college student in Houston, Texas, I would often just buy a pint of Pralines and Cream or Pistachio Almond Fudge for my dinner! So bushed was I from work – packing parcels – I had no energy to cook, and I had early morning classes the following day. Ice-cream was my true energy booster.

As you can see, ice-cream formed an indelible chunk of my childhood. But who would have imagined in a million years that I would one day own my own ice- cream company? Certainly, not me!

New branch
Carmen’s Best is coming soon to Power Plant

At last, the long wait is over – Carmen’s Best is going to have its own ice-cream parlor!

I’ve always wanted to have our own shop since starting the business in 2011. My ideal location was Makati, and by late February, both dreams are going to be realized. In fact, we are now in the middle of working with the architect and interior designer to fix up a 25 sqm space on the second floor of the new wing.

I think it’s just fitting that Carmen’s Best has an outlet in Power Plant as we want to reach out to more people. People, who appreciate good quality, and can understand the difference between the contenders and the pretenders.

Our shop will be an extension of home. Think of it as a friendly and cozy place to hang out when you mall at Power Plant. We plan to offer all our ice-cream flavors, concoct our own waffle cones, sundaes, frappes and whip up various coffee drinks using Holly’s Milk from the family’s farm in Laguna.

I’ll keep you posted on developments. Once Carmen’s Best Ice-Cream Parlor is open, I’ll be there waiting for you!

Warm regards,
PACO
