Last week our whole school travelled to Western Heights School to participate in a shared Matariki experience and were fortunate to watch the internationally acclaimed Maori Artist - Jerome Kavanagh.
Grammy award winning soloist and Maori musical instrument specialist, Jerome Kavanagh, hails from the Mokai Patea, Maniapoto ki Raukawa, Kahungunu tribes (Maori) and the Caomhanach clan (Irish). He was first introduced to the sound of Taonga Puoro at aged 16 by one of his aunties. A family owned Koauau was the first instrument he recalls learning to play.
Jerome now makes and plays traditional Maori instruments. He can and does play just about anything - from sticks and stones, to shells and bones, even seaweed and a crayfish leg.
Our children and staff were entranced.
Our day began with a Powhiri welcome by Western Heights School. Our Kapa Haka children buddied up with Western Heights children and were looked after by them superbly throughout the day. At 11am we were joined by Kapa Haka children from Summerland School, and we all shared in Jerome’s interactive show.
We all know the didgeridoo, unique to Australia, but probably not many of us know the Putorino. Its tune is haunting and ancient and we hope to acquire a simple one at some point, and also some plastic versions that children could learn to play and which would be easily sterilised.
