Matariki @ Western Heights

Last week our whole school travelled to Western Heights School to participate in a shared Matariki experience and were fortunate to watch the internationally acclaimed Maori Artist - Jerome Kavanagh.

Grammy award winning soloist and Maori musical instrument specialist, Jerome Kavanagh, hails from the Mokai Patea, Maniapoto ki Raukawa, Kahungunu tribes (Maori) and the Caomhanach clan (Irish). He was first introduced to the sound of Taonga Puoro at aged 16 by one of his aunties. A family owned Koauau was the first instrument he recalls learning to play.

Jerome now makes and plays traditional Maori instruments. He can and does play just about anything - from sticks and stones, to shells and bones, even seaweed and a crayfish leg.
Our children and staff were entranced.

Our day began with a Powhiri welcome by Western Heights School. Our Kapa Haka children buddied up with Western Heights children and were looked after by them superbly throughout the day. At 11am we were joined by Kapa Haka children from Summerland School, and we all shared in Jerome’s interactive show.
We all know the didgeridoo, unique to Australia, but probably not many of us know the Putorino. Its tune is haunting and ancient and we hope to acquire a simple one at some point, and also some plastic versions that children could learn to play and which would be easily sterilised.

Fun Run - Collection Time
Now that the hard yards have been run it is time to collect the money and hand this in by Friday 24 June. This will allow us enough time to order the prizes and have them arrive by the end of the term. We have calculated that our children have raised $683.00.

Reminder: Students who have raised enough money can order prizes that add up to the total value they have raised.  For example, if they raised $30, they can order one from the $20 category and one from the $10 category. This will be calculated once all the funds have been handed in.

Term 4 - Auckland Zoo

In term four we will look at how Auckland Zoo cares for our amazing animals. By observing an animal in its enclosure, students will learn about animals needs, both at the zoo and in the wild.

We will investigate the different roles of people at the zoo, the behavioural enrichment used, and enclosure design. We will find out what the zoo does to help protect Kiwi in the wild too. Students will explore with activities in the Discovery room and make observations at animals' enclosures.

Students will be comparing the actions of zoos in the past with the role of a modern zoo today.

Guided observations of animals in the zoo grounds will help students to develop an understanding of enclosure design, behavioural enrichment and how the zoo is home to many animals because they are endangered in the wild.

More info will be provided closer to the date.
