Geocaching Scavenger Hunt: A Technology-Enriched Math Activity

by Jessica Broussard, 8th grade math Teacher at Wright STEAM Magnet

8th grade students in Mrs. Broussard’s math class participated in the Second-Annual MEGA STEAM GeoFest at Wright Middle School STEAM Magnet last week.  GeoFest is the entry event to a project-based learning unit created by 8th grade English, history, science, and math teachers at Wright STEAM Magnet.  This engaging entry activity consisted of students navigating a scavenger hunt that led them all over campus in search of clues that would reveal a secret finish line.  The clues were hidden at precise coordinates at various locations on Wright’s campus.  In order to find the clues, students were given the latitude and longitude points, an iPad, and were instructed on how to use an app called Coordinates.  Students entered the latitude and longitude coordinates into the app, and the app located the coordinates and displayed them on a map that students used to locate the clue.   Students then used the iPad to take a picture with the hidden clues; no picture, no credit.  Once they found all six locations, the students had to unscramble the letters in order to find their final destination.

Sexting is Dangerous.jpg

LAUSD Launches Anti-Sexting Campaign

Develops Video and Resources to Teach Students

In response to a growing use of social media by students to post or send photos or videos of a sexual nature, the Los Angeles Unified School District has launched an anti-sexting campaign.

The ‘Now Matters Later’ initiative teaches students about the dangers of sexting, and the possible social, disciplinary and criminal consequences. A video will be shown to students in grades six through 12 to introduce the concept of sexting, encourage healthy boundaries and highlight the risks. Additional resources include classroom lessons that help teachers instruct students on how to say no if asked for a picture or video of a sexual nature. The lesson plans also will show: how to problem solve, and how to explore risks and responsibilities in a digital world.

For resources including videos, posters, and lessons for students, parents and teachers, please visit the Now Matters Later website,
