December 2015 Update

Buddy Rampey, District Superintendent
Tony Casey, Assistant District Superintendent
Melinda Witty, Executive Assistant

By this time in my life, I can remember quite a few Christmas seasons. I remember them with the wonder of a child. In fact, I hear folks say that “Christmas is for children.” Typically they are thinking of the fantasy - and I am inclined to agree. But, it is more. I remember the early years as newlyweds and our first Christmas tree and trips home for the holidays. Those warm times of gathering with family and friends in fellowship were special and are treasured memories, but there is more. Then, children came along, and we experienced the wonder of Christmas all over again.   The excitement and exhilaration of anticipation and realized wishes that came true made for some special days and hours, but there is more.

Many of our memories as a couple and a family centered around church and the Advent celebrations. Christmas worship, programs, musicals, Christmas caroling and special times of fellowship and fun. I have even come up with a few extra Christmas plans over the years. (e.g. Early in the life of our church plant, I had the great idea for our family to go caroling and take cookies to all the church family. Several Christmas afternoons were spent with me and the children distributing left over treat bags to the “housing projects.”) As you can see, some plans were better than others. Local church ministry at this time of year is rewarding and fulfilling indeed, but there is more.

The deeper meaning of Christmas belongs to everyone, everywhere, at every age. For those who are defeated, it brings hope. For the depressed, it brings love. For all with sins that are unforgiven, He brings forgiveness. For our dark and dismal world mired in war and filled with fear for the future, the star of Bethlehem shines to remind all that there is still hope available which can turn our fears, frustrations and sorrows into joy and gladness. That is the more of Christmas.

One of our constants for the past eleven years is hearts filled with gratitude for the blessing of serving the Lord here in South Carolina. We are surrounded by a marvelous team of district leaders and wonderful pastors who are serving God, their congregations and increasingly, their communities. Our existing congregations, along with new church plants, are realizing increased attendance and record numbers of conversions and baptisms. We are especially grateful for the support and assistance of our new Executive Administrator, Melinda Witty. She has been a blessing beyond measure. The continued ministry of Rev. Tony Casey as Assistant District Superintendent is deeply appreciated. He is providing leadership in several crucial areas of development in this district year.

Pictured above is our family on our annual SC coastal vacation in June. They continue to bring great joy and blessings into our lives, and it is always special to be together. Our November Christmas this year was no exception. (Here is a link to a more recent, impromptu family photo in front of our home during our “Thanksmas” Celebration last month.)

We had the privilege of caring for my mother for almost three months in our home prior to her going to the nursing home. Her physical and mental condition have been on a decline since a fall and broken hip just after Christmas last year. Dad is still pretty active, and they celebrated their 73rd Wedding Anniversary on December 12!

We continue to appreciate the opportunity to share new office space with the Southern Wesleyan University - Greenville campus. We all moved earlier this fall down I-385 to the Roper Mtn. Road Exit. Our being able to live in a more central location for the district work also proved to be providential since we are so much closer to my parents.

We treasure you - our family, our colleagues and our friends - who continue to bless us with your prayers and encouragement. It is our prayer that you will continue to experience the “more of Christmas" in this season and the coming year.

The annual District Pastors’ Gathering is just three weeks away (January 11-13). We are delighted to welcome Dr. Wayne Schmidt, Vice-President of Wesley Seminary, as our presenter. Dr. Schmidt is a highly respected leader in The Wesleyan Church and a valued friend to pastors and leaders.

District News . . .

The ALIVE and Pleasant View congregations and DBA have approved the establishing of a campus: ALIVE Wesleyan Church: Pleasant View Campus.  This new ministry is committed to reach spiritually hungry people in the Williamston-Belton area.

Pastor/Church Relations

Pastor Aaron Gadsby has accepted a new pastoral leadership position in the Penn-Jersey District, effective January, 2016. Casey and the children will continue to live in Six Mile until the school year is completed. This pastoral couple has been very involved in and committed to the district in their 10 years with us. They will be missed, but we are grateful with them for the opportunity to return “home” and be nearer family.

Southern Wesleyan University has appointed Pastor Scott Williams to a new position providing instruction and ministry to on-line students, effective January 18. The ministry of Scott and Teresa has been appreciated by the Lyman Church, and they will be missed, but we rejoice with them in this new door of ministry that has been opened to them. Pastor Tom Boland will serve the Lyman congregation on an interim basis.
