Paid Union Meetings for Teachers and Support Staff

On the afternoon of Monday September 12 there is a combined Paid Union Meeting for our teachers and teacher aides who are Union members.
Some schools are closing at this time - we are not closing.
We have sufficient non-union-member staff to be able to provide care and supervision for our children. I am a union member, but will be staying on here to help with care and supervision.
School will finish at the usual time of 3pm. Thanks.

Our children do best when teachers and parents work closely together. This is one of the strengths of our system, and of Western Heights in particular. Seesaw is a great example of a WHS initiative to help parents and teachers work together.
As a teaching profession, we need parental support and understanding in order to be able to do our job well. One of the reasons we didn’t close our school for this Paid Union Meeting is because we don’t want to inconvenience you. Half days can be really disruptive for working parents.
We hope though you will have a look at and a think about some of the changes the government is planning, and decide whether they are in the best interests of our children, or maybe just a way to save money for the government.
A few years ago the government wanted to shut down Technology Centres at Intermediate schools across New Zealand. Parents all over the country stood up and said no. They valued the soft and hard materials, the food technology, and the important life skills these centres offered. Parents opposed that move so strongly, the government changed its mind.

Our union members are meeting to discuss the government’s review of education funding provision.
Some of the information we have received about their proposals and possible plans is concerning to many.

The Government  proposal would dramatically change the way schools are funded. Principals and Boards of Trustees would have to make trade-offs between teaching staff and other costs schools face.

Teachers are very worried that the global budget would lead to:

  • fewer teachers and larger class sizes
  • less job security for teachers
  • lower quality teaching
  • fewer hours for teacher aides and support staff
  • more complex financial work for Boards of Trustees

The Government's current funding review is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to better fund education. NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA are the unions that represent more than 60,000 teachers and support staff from birth to year 13. They have asked all union members at our school to attend meetings in September to hear more about the proposal and help determine the education sector’s response.

It is important for union members in our school to attend these meetings to have a say about how we get better funding, not bulk funding.

Junior School Mini Olympics

Last week our junior school held their own Mini Olympics. There were lots of excellent options for our children - though a couple of them I hadn't really noticed at the Olympics I'd have to say.
Examples would be the bounce-a-ball-off-a-parachute challenge, the weight-lifting with hockey sticks and water filled balloons challenge; and the always popular run-with-a-balloon-between-your-legs challenge.
Much kudos to Lauren Nummy for organising this cool event. Our kids had great fun, were enthusiastic, supportive (and patient waiters-for-their-turn).

Daffodil Day Support Much Appreciated

A big thank you to our children, parents and staff for your support for Daffodil Day last Friday.
Heaps of you dressed in yellow and did your bit to raise awareness, raise funds, and brighten our day as well as that of cancer sufferers throughout New Zealand.
For may years my dad was a volunteer driver for the Cancer Society. What he learned was that cancer is no respecter of age, general health of life background. It can strike anyone - in fact one in three New Zealanders are affected by cancer. He also learned how brave ordinary, everyday New Zealanders are. So many coped with horrible challenges, stoically and bravely. They were all so appreciative of any and all help they received.
Our efforts on Friday raised $563.70 for the NZ Cancer Society. Thank you all.

Olympic Closing Ceremony Photos

We finished up our Olympics focus with an awesome closing ceremony for the whole school last Friday.
Each country came in to our hall to the accompaniment of their National Anthem. There was an air of joy and celebration and the flag waving and dancing was a sight to see.
Two representatives from Brazil handed the Olympic Flag to two representatives from Japan (who are about to leave for Japan just by the by). We then extinguished the Olympic Flame and left to Justin Timberlake’s “Dance, Dance, Dance - Can’t Help the Feeling”.

Riveting Robotics at Mindlab

Last Thursday I took four of our Senior  Robotics Team members to the Mindlab at Unitec - Declyn, Aaryan, Manav and Kevin.
They began with a course in programming using “Scratch”.
Logic, planning, testing and trialling, re-jigging and reflecting were all important skills they had to apply.
In the afternoon they programmed robot vehicles to follow their commands.
It was challenging, enjoyable and rewarding.
We call this “Hard Fun” at Western Heights.

Marvellous Minecrafting

Sophie and Mia built their own Olympic venue in Minecraft. They did an exceptional job, with lots of stadium features included - including a fireworks facility to celebrate Gold Medal wins.
They had an Olympic Village, athletes’ quarters, rest areas, food facilities, seating arrangements and so much more - including cleverly designed toilets for the competitors.

Fabulous Footballer

Pilatati just scored his 100th goal a weekend ago.
He plays for Ranui Swanson and is obviously a player with a future.

Palomino Shops Parking Problems

Parking in and around Western Heights School - as with most city schools in New Zealand - is a huge problem.
Our friends at the Palomino Shopping Centre are seriously impacted by the parking problem between 2:30pm and 3:30pm. We have parents parking on yellow lines, parking where there are no parks, or sitting in valid parking spaces for quite a long time in order to “book their place”.
This can cause serious problems for the elderly in our community in particular. Patients trying to get to the Doctor at Palomino are unable to get a place to park. For unwell, injured and/or elderly patients, this is a big problem.
If parents were prepared to park down the road a bit, it would make a big difference. The little bit of extra exercise could be seen as a bonus - no gym costs - for both children and parents.
Your thoughts, help and understanding all appreciated.
