President's Message

It’s only been a couple of weeks since we celebrated the Singapore Swimming Association Awards and Appreciation Night 2016 held on 23 April 2016 at the Shangri-la Hotel. The night saw 420 athletes, coaches, officials and parents wind-down and celebrate an outstanding year of aquatics. I would personally like to congratulate all award winners, and extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to SSA’s achievements – pushing boundaries, breaking frontiers, setting records. I hope all of you enjoyed the night as much as we did!

Heartiest congratulations to diver, Freida Lim, for her acceptance at Clemson University in the United States on a full athletic scholarship, making her the first Singaporean diver to compete in the top division of the NCAA system. Our synchronised swimming duet, Debbie Soh and Miya Yong, did us proud at the 92nd Japan Open Synchronised Swimming Championships.

While celebrating achievements, we also share bitter-sweet news. Sergio Lopez recently announced his decision to resign as national head coach. Sergio has been a wonderful coach and mentor over the past 16 months, and a pleasure to have around. He has taken swimming to a new level in Singapore, but will be moving back home to the USA with his family after leading our swimmers at the Rio Olympics in August. We wish him the very best and our next immediate step is to search for the world-class expertise that will take swimming to the next level. We will ensure that there will be minimal, if any, disruptions to our athletes' training progress and development.

We’re finally getting closer to the Rio Olympics, and our swimmers will be flying the Singapore flag as they leave our shores at the end of this month for a three month long training camp. We wish them the very best as they get ready to make our country proud.

SSA Awards and Appreciation Night 2016
The SSA Awards and Appreciation Night 2016 was held on 23 April 2016. On top of recognising and celebrating the achievements of our athletes in 2015, Guest-of-Honour, Minister Grace Fu, presented Awards to the winners. SSA President, Mr Lee Kok Choy, also announced that SSA have put in place five year plans for each discipline and high performance development pathways. For all our aquatic disciplines, we aim to be top 4 in Asia as well as making a strong push towards the 2020 Olympic Games.

SSA begins search for new world-class expertise to continue long-term vision for success
SSA announced last Friday that Swimming Head Coach, Sergio Lopez, has resigned from his role as he has decided to move back to United States with his family. He will, however, continue with his duties as head coach until the end of Rio Olympics and give his fullest commitment to the Rio bound swimming in their preparation.
