MALAWI NEWSLETTER: JULY 2018

Robin Pope Safaris expands into Liwonde
We are thrilled to announce the opening of Robin Pope Safaris' Kuthengo Camp in Liwonde National Park, Malawi. Meaning "the wild" or "the bush" Kuthengo is located among fever trees on a large open plain along the spectacular Shire River.

The camp boasts four spacious en-suite safari tents, each featuring an outdoor shower, bathtub, basin (double) and state-of-the-art ‘Evening Breeze’ air-conditioned beds, as well as a private deck for enjoying sunset views. The main area and dining area are located under a magnificent fever tree, overlooking the Shire River where herds of elephants and other game are frequently seen coming down for a drink or to cool off.
Dame Kelly Holmes seeking Malawi Challenge participants
Double Olympic Champion, British record holder and charity founder Dame Kelly Holmes, along with 20 teammates, will run, cycle and kayak across Malawi in support of improving nutrition. Food security remains a serious issue for Malawi – the 2017 Global Hunger Index states that over a quarter of the country’s population are undernourished.

Kelly is excited to be working with the education and philanthropic travel company Orbis Expeditions to help them launch Sport with a Purpose.  The cause for 2018’s expedition is Street Chef, an initiative that aims to get more nutritious street food out to Malawians, using locally sourced food, cooked in an environmentally friendly way.
Airlines now making it even easier to travel to Malawi
Thanks to Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways, multiple new routes have been added around the globe to allow for more frequent and alternative routes to Africa. Though these flights are between the new destination and their own Africa hubs, frequent flights to and from Malawi allow for a simple onward journey to the Warm Heart of Africa.

Kenya Airways has recently announced an additional 26 weekly frequencies between its Nairobi Hub and destinations across Africa and Europe for 2018.

Ethiopian Airlines have also recently  added new destinations Chicago, and Manchester to their rapidly growing list.

Umodzi Park secures Most Consistent Award
Umodzi Park, a 5 star hotel and conference centre in Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital city, received the award for the Most Consistent Performing Property in 2017. The award was presented at the Peermont Top Achievers Awards, hosted recently at Emperors Palace Hotel Casino and Convention Resort in Johannesburg, South Africa.

“The Most Consistent Performing Property category is one of only four awards that can be won by a Peermont unit.” says David Church, general manager at Umodzi Park. “The award is very special to us as it affirmed the consistency and effort we invested during 2017. This is also the first time a hotel outside of South Africa has won this award.”

Lots happening at Central African Wilderness Safaris
Central African Wilderness Safaris have had another eventful couple of months and have lots of interesting stories in their newsletters.

In their April Newsletter, heavy bouts of rainfall provide fantastic game viewing including elephant sightings, and the team host two blogging families as they discover why Mvuu is perfect for kids.

In May, the CAWS team took a group of guests from Mvuu on the ‘Shire River Trail’, a three day trek spanning across 30km of scenic floodplains and Miombo woodlands in Liwonde National Park. Find out how they got on in the newsletter.
Sleeping Under the Stars on the shores of Lake Malawi
Falling asleep in the arms of your lover under a clear African sky of twinkling stars is probably one of the most romantic things you will ever do.

For most of us, we reside in built-up, concrete jungles, where our security is always our primary concern, so the idea of the freedom of a wall-less bedroom, with no-one else around (other than your significant other), does sound extremely inviting!

The concept is that an elaborate, four-poster bed, dressed in crisp, white luxurious linen, draped in an elegant mosquito net, is placed in a stunning location - normally just far enough from the main lodge to feel alone.
The latest lowdown on Lilongwe WIldlife Trust
With a busy couple of months, Lilongwe WIldlife Trust have been hard at work protecting and conserving Malawi’s thriving wildlife population, and the statistics in their latest newsletters speak volumes.

The LWT team have also just launched their Wildlife Justice Internship. Find out more in the full article.

The May newsletter contains more rescues and rehabiliation stories,  conservation news including local students studying to become the next generation of Malawi’s vets, and a fantastic turnout for a school presentation by LWT.
