Welcome to our July 2016 edition of the BPN National Newsletter. What better way to keep warm as we reach the heart of Winter, than to keep nice and busy and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing. Firstly we welcome Sarah Eynon, NSW Network Coordinator, to the BPN family. Sarah will primarily be assisting Gareth Brown our NSW Director. Sarah has a wealth of experience and will be a valuable addition to the team.
We’ve had a stellar month of activity in June, with visits to Holden, Street Furniture and PGH, to name but a few. I was fortunate enough to participate in the first of the Countdown Project Management Workshops run by TXM facilitator Kevin Bennett. I found the simulated interactive style of the course outline, hugely beneficial in building knowledge.
Look out for the final Countdown workshops running in NSW and WA in July and August.
We have a bumper second half of year ahead with Cheryl Jekiel, founder of the Lean Leadership Resource Centre, coming to our shores from Chicago. Cheryl will be running some exclusive workshops for the Best Practice Network (see more information below). Together with a host of other wonderful and insightful events to look out for via the events link below. Best Practice Network National Events
We hope you enjoy this issue! Vicky Schembri

First, Sue quit. Then, Laura
quit. Then the team sent a letter to HR complaining about Joe. The
letter then went to the president of the company. Uh oh. After investigating the situation by
talking with everyone, it’s clear that people appreciate Joe’s knowledge of the
industry and he’s really good at problem solving by himself. The issue is that
people on the team feel stifled and disrespected. Joe also has a tendency to
take his stress out on his team and they are getting more and more upset by it.
By now, they feel like they’ve raised the issue a few times, and no one is
listening. What should they do? Over the years, I’ve had many leaders
identified as needing to build their people skills. They often are some of
the most valuable team members in terms of their technical abilities and length
of time in the industry, but their teams don’t like working for them. In fact,
the greater the lean transformation, the more dissatisfied the team members
become with these leaders. READ FULL ARTICLE Cheryl will be coming to Australia in August to run four workshops nationally and BPN members are invited to participate (free of charge!). Rethinking

“When the General Talks…” Automotive Excellence at Holden Engine Plant - VIC 23/6/16

BPN were very privileged to join the last
ever tour of an Australian Manufacturing icon - the Holden Engine Plant. Scheduled to close its doors in November 2016, Site Manager, Martin Merry,
treated BPN to a very special event; showing the group what 5 decades of
continuous improvement and Lean focus can develop. It was a full
house, with members from NSW and QLD joining us. A great day,
appreciated by all. RIP the Australian Automotive Industry.
________________________________________________________________________________ “It was great for me as a site manager to see real examples of lean tools in
practice, and the efficiencies the site has gained from them. We are
relatively early in our efforts to improve efficiency using a lean production
system, but this visit has helped us to see what is possible. I cannot
thank the Holden site management team enough, especially Plant Manager Martin Merry,
for a great presentation and for being so open in sharing their
expertise. Also to the BPN staff for creating this opportunity for others
to learn.”

"Our visit to PGH Bricks and Pavers was time well spent for our organisation.
The passion and pride displayed by the PGH team for their plant was very obvious and their
willingness to share learnings and also take on board an outsiders perspective, places their
organisation in good stead for not only cultural sustainability but continuous improvement in
general."

Vision into Action: Problem Solving & Change Management at Asahi - NSW 9/6/2016

"I enjoyed immensely the hosts’ presentation, as well as the site tour. The tour was very informative and the guide was very competent. I really like the idea of having problem solving rooms and the site housekeeping was very impressive.” Magda King, CI Engineer, CSR Viridian
"I attended two Best Practice sessions, one at Asahi
Schweppes and another at Street Furniture. The BPN
team did an amazing job in organizing the meet-ups; with the companies
they had chosen displaying tremendous knowledge.
Positive experience." Pure Nakhasi, Vodafone Australia

Lean in the Office at MtM - VIC 8/06/16

“I enjoyed my visit with BPN to MtM in Clayton. Coming from outside manufacturing, but with experience in Lean in the Office
initiatives.
Very pleased to see strong use of visualisation - which is a challenge
for us where there is a culture of having all useful information inside a computer. The other 'takeaway' for me was how Lean must always be evolving, and
even Lean systems become more efficient and business-focussed the more you
work on them." Richard Chapman | Lean and Six Sigma Improvement Project Leader, Service
Design and Operations Group| Department of Health and Human Services READ MORE

The BPN 'Bike Trip' - Phillip Island to Kernot VIC 29/05/16

"We were an eclectic group of BMW’s, a
pretty cool and fast scooter, a Norton, a Yamaha MT-01 and a Harley Sport. Might
have started off a little chilly in the morning but the weather was sunny,
there was plenty of food, some great windy roads and the company was good, as
is life this way.
Thanks to
Victor for organising; Doug for leading the way and all the fellas for their
company.” Colin Atkin, Executive Director, Hastings Funds Management

"What was inspiring was to then listen to Jack Holman, the Head Cheesemaker at Yarra Valley Dairy, talk about why he has such passion for his work and business. The culture at
Yarra Valley came from the leader. It wasn’t an accident. It was what Leo
Mooney wanted to make happen. And what has taken place is a mirror reflection
of his values. Bingo – that’s powerful! This tells us a lot about leadership. What you give is what you get? If we as leaders want ownership, responsibility, innovation and creativity in our organisations, then we have to establish that as the culture." READ FULL ARTICLE
