Welcome to our Christmas Newsletter Edition

We hope that you have had a successful and prosperous 2017, and that 2018 is shaping up very well for you and your company.

2017 - A Year of Disruption and Transformation

“ If you aren’t out there disrupting yourself, then some else is going to come along and disrupt you”

A very relevant quote from Alan Joyce, Qantas CEO, who has transformed Qantas to be one of the world’s leading airlines and a star on the ASX Index. The many changes happening across industry, show how important it is for you to be informed and connected to remain ahead of the game.

The Best Practice Network provides you with the opportunity to see how your peers are innovating and  operating differently. I have recently observed just how many of our member companies are embarking on game changing strategies. Call it “disruption” but the challenge is to transform to remain competitive. Australian retailers are now under pressure from Amazon, who just opened its first distribution warehouse in Melbourne. Robert Bruce, who is well known to our manufacturing community, is at the helm of this distribution centre. Two large Aussie icon manufacturers - Murray Goulburn and Godfrey Hirst - are about to be acquired by international companies. And CUB was recently taken over by Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer. Interesting times!

We at the Best Practice Network have also had a fantastic year, with more companies joining in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia. As our Network grows larger, we provide you with more and more opportunities for networking, collaboration and industry sharing. It is especially pleasing to see our members travelling interstate to participate in events and activities.

What’s ahead for 2018?

On 23 February 2018, we will hold our annual Operational Excellence National Summit - in 2018 we are holding it in the stunning surrounds of the Sunshine Coast. The Summit is your opportunity to hear from leading Australian companies on how they are “Leading Transformation and Building Capability” across their business to stay competitive. Attendance at the Summit is included as part of your membership. The program has been designed to deliver innovative, attendee-driven content that will answer your key questions on this exciting theme.

Drew Locher, author and multiple Shingo prize recipient, is our International Keynote Speaker at the Summit. Drew will also be facilitating lean and Value Stream Mapping workshops across Australia. More international workshop presenters are planned for 2018 - watch this space.

Member Survey - Help Improve Your Network

A reminder to complete your Member Survey - your feedback is critical to help us deliver events and activities tailored to your needs. The survey takes less than five minutes to complete. The survey was emailed to all members last week. However, you can also complete the 2017 Member Survey online here (closes 22 December).

Survey respondents go into the draw to win a $100 Hoyts Gift Card - a great prize for the Christmas holidays.

Thank You for a Great Year

On behalf of the Best Practice Network team, we sincerely thank you for your involvement with us over the past year. Enjoy the Christmas break with your family and friends and make it safe for all.

See you in 2018!

Best,

Darwalla Group Wins National Training Award

Congratulations to the team at the Darwalla Group, who recently won the Medium Employer of the Year Award at the National Training Awards.  In our last edition we had reported that the Darwalla Group had won at the State level (Queensland Training Awards) and it is fantastic to see them recognised at the national level.

Well done to the Darwalla Group - your hard work and commitment to building a great organisation is showing just rewards.

Recent Event Highlights

12 October 2017 - Energy Cost Management -

Barrett Buston Malting VIC

“The Special Interest Group on Energy Cost Management covered a wealth of information in a

concise way that was easy to absorb. The main benefits of this network were the interactions

between the various businesses - learning, not only do we have a shared problem, but also that

there are common solutions that can be adopted across the group.”

John Monaghan, Energy Manager, PGH Bricks

27 October 2017 - Human Lean, Inspiring Curiosity -

Ozgene WA

"I really enjoyed the BPN visit to Ozgene. In fact, it was my first BPN visit anywhere! The

professionalism of the Ozgene team was very high and the team should be commended on their

excellent work to date. It was great to see how successfully continuous improvement methodologies

have been implemented in a non-manufacturing environment. The additional benefit of the event

was to network with like-minded individuals and to build my professional network. I look forward

to future events."

Karen Morgan, People & Performance Advisor, Laminex

1 November 2017 - From Uncertainty to Success, the Asahi Wulkuraka Story - Asahi Beverages QLD

My first BPN meeting was a fantastic experience at Asahi and gave me the opportunity to see

how other companies engage their staff and encourage opportunities within the workplace, as well

as seeing how they have set out their floor space to maximise manufacturing impact.

It was great to be able to network with other people from companies who are on the same path,

which gave me a greater understanding of the challenges that other companies face.”

Simon Joyce, Learning and Development Coordinator, EGR

16 November 2017 - New Product Information, Design to Global Manufacturing - ResMed NSW

“It was the first time I attended an event organized by the Best Practice Network. I must say it

was a very well organized event. The overview given by ResMed on how they overcame the

challenges in their product development process was insightful. The factory visit was quite

engaging and it was good to see many of the continuous improvement best practices

implemented there. The discussion at the end was extremely beneficial as attendees with

different industry backgrounds openly shared their valuable feedback.”

Jamshed Anwer, CI Manager - Service Operations and Performance, Vodafone

17 November 2017 - Michael Bremer Gemba Walk Workshop - Bluescope Steel WA

"I walked out of that workshop with a completely different knowledge base. It was as if a lightbulb

had been turned on. It proves the old adage about it never being too late to learn.

I have taken onboard the various lessons and look forward to developing my Gemba skills with

time and practice. Of the many snippets I took away that day, I will be listening more and

empowering my guys through more involvement and active participation.

Thank you, Michael Bremer and the Best Practice Network for organising such a useful workshop."

Stephen Hill, Operations Coordinator, Schutz Australia

————————

[The Best Practice Network was proud to invite Michael Bremer, Shingo Prize

Winner, to host four workshops across VIC, NSW, QLD and WA in November -

the workshops were excellent and we thank Michael for his fantastic work, and

our many workshop participants for their enthusiastic involvement. We look

forward to hosting more exciting international workshop speakers in 2018!]
