Welcome to our February bulletin
We hope this bulletin will keep you up-to-date with topical financial matters that can directly affect you… and your money!
Most of us may raise a cynical smile at the idea of a gypsy reading our own fortune from a crystal ball, but will pay great attention to the words of wisdom delivered by our so called “experts” as they confidently pass on their predictions for the future.
Resolutions we make with such determination at the beginning of the new year seem designed to simply remind us of how difficult it is to change our habits.
However using the start of a New Year to take stock of our lives and the way in which we view the world can be therapeutic and hopefully, will help us to achieve the best we can from the year ahead.
At Integra we like to look back at the previous twelve months to see the events which actually happened, rather than those which were predicted to happen. This is an important process as we plan an investment philosophy for the coming months.
Outlook for 2018
Much like 2017 we see a continuation of global growth and low inflation across all major regions. Despite the recent market volatility, the outlook for 2018 is still benign. That being said; while most countries appear to have at least one good year left in them, at this point as we’re nearing the top of the cycle in Economic terms and it is quite easy for recessions/downturns to be brought on early or delayed a little bit by government and central bank policy.
Since the EU referendum last year, whilst the media and the politicians of Europe appear to have done nothing other than debate the potential downsides of Brexit, they also seem to have missed altogether the very welcome changes that are actually taking place all over Europe. Employment and productivity figures are improving and the Quantitative Easing measures do at last seem to be having some desired effects.
The Trump Presidency - One year on
As the world media considers the passing of his first year in office they also examine Donald Trump’s suitability to be the President of the USA.
As an non-conformist political figure the media also examines his previously unseen and untried methods of communication.
With his well-documented spats with Kim Jong and Vladimir Putin, the President has again adopted an unconventional and some see confrontational approach to Diplomatic affairs by announcing the US as “Guardians of the Free World”.
Whatever our personal opinions, there is little doubt that where recent diplomatic initiatives had previously failed his unconventional tweets on the superiority of US military appears to have brought about a welcome and positive change in attitude in both Pyongyang and Beijing.
At least for now.
