Farewell Mr Andrew Noakes

After three decades of sterling service to Western Heights School - as a teacher and as a Deputy Principal also for a time - Mr Andrew Noakes has announced his retirement, effective as of the end of this term.

I am sure you will join me in wishing Andrew well, and I am equally sure his children will look to make the most of their remaining time in Andrew’s class.

We are sad to lose Andrew, as he is a true character, a multi talented and passionate teacher and full of ideas and humour.

However, as one door closes, a new one opens, and we are delighted to be able to bring Jarred on board. More about Jarred Tito in a later issue.

Official Farewell for Andrew Noakes

Friday 8 April - 11am

Farewell Assembly followed by a light lunch at

Western Heights Primary School

More info to follow soon.

Learning Conferences

Thank you to all our parents who supported our Learning Conferences. Thank you also to our dedicated staff. The conferences were a great success and we are really pleased with

1. the information we received.

2. the information we shared

3. the progress made with Seesaw

3. the relationships we established or strengthened.

If you have not yet met with your child’s teacher, they will be following up with you to work out an alternative time, as this is a vitally important part of our teaching and learning programme.

Seesaw our ePortfolio Learning Journal

Thank you for your awesome support for our new Electronic Learning Journal - Seesaw.

We are really pleased that we have the vast majority of parents signed up by now. If you don’t have a smart phone, tablet or computer of some sort, there will be an iMac computer set up in our office area for you to use for Seesaw purposes as and when suits you.

Hopefully it will be installed by the end of this week.

Meanwhile, if you are not signed up yet, please ask your child’s teacher, or myself, for help, and we’ll have you signed up and sorted in no time.

Farewelling International Friends

Sadly we had to farewell our Chinese and Korean International Student visitors last Friday.
We farewelled four of each and all their classmates (and teachers) were sad to see them leave.
Our visitors bring with them an international perspective, cultural richness and provide the opportunity for our children to gain a first-hand insight into what life can be like for children who live and learn on the other side of the world. We wish all our departing friends happiness and success in their future.

Improving Our Environment

Thank you to those parents who reminded me that at times our school looked quite scruffy, due in the main to a lack of borders around our gardens, which led to a lot of leaves, mulch and similar drifting and gathering in our main quad area.
We have installed KwikKerb curbing, and it has made an awesome difference.
This is stage one of improvements to our school frontage and quad area this year.

Swimming Sports at West Wave

Tomorrow we are taking our Western Heights Swimming Team to the Inter-schools competition.  This is being held at Westwave Aquatics Centre.  The first race will start at 10:30pm and the whole competition should be finished by 2:30pm.  A huge thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to transport our children to and from this competition tomorrow.  If you are staying tomorrow, we would suggest that you park at Tui Glen Reserve which you can enter from Edmonton Road. There is a bridge that connects Tui Glen to the Westwave complex. The parking at Westwave is patrolled by parking wardens.
We have entered teams into the Freestyle and Backstroke events for 8, 9 and 10 year olds.  We also have two teams entered into the medley races.  This is where we have a team of six swimmers, a mixture of boys and girls and two will swim freestyle, two will swim backstroke and two will swim breaststroke. Our first medley team is made up of our 8 and 9 years olds.  Our second medley team is comprised of some of our 10 year old children.
We would like to wish all our swimmers the best of luck tomorrow.
PS: Both Jo-Ann Yukich (who has done sterling work training our swimmers) are unable to attend this event. We are both very disappointed but wish our children and teachers well.

Out and About in West Auckland

Chinese New Year has been celebrated this year from the 14th February.  Many celebrations have been happening all around New Zealand. The Henderson Library has opened their doors to this event with our local Asian families getting involved in performing and share their vibrant culture and traditions with us. Below is Krogil Saberhagen  (Hazel and Aaron's mum) and her Korean friends sharing their amazing talent with us. These pictures are a few of the different instruments they used.
Instrument names from second photo from left to right.
Jing (traditional Korean Gong), Kkwaenggwari (small Gong), 2 Buks (Drum) and 3 Janggu (slim waist drum).
These 4 instruments are called "Samulnori" a Korean drum set with 4 percussion instruments.
