Steelhead Paradise

Steelhead in BC's Golden Season

Dear friends,

Over the past decade-plus I’ve been fortunate to hold down a prime late September week with the great crew at Nicholas Dean Outdoors in Terrace, BC. The week is advantageously positioned for peak run timing and optimal water temperatures. Given reasonable flows and clarity, this timeframe can offer perfect opportunities for raising the Skeena’s oversized steelhead to the surface, including to both waking flies and upstream dries. Many of my most treasured steelhead angling memories have been made in this week. In short, it’s a cornerstone Steelhead Flyfisher trip — one that I highly anticipate each year.

In past years, this outing in the “golden season” has filled well in advance. Openings have been rare. For 2017, due to a confluence of factors, the trip has not yet filled; I have a few openings remaining. Dates are September 24-30 and, with the currency exchange, the rate is very favorable. I urge you join me and seize this golden opportunity!

Read on. Then contact me for more information and to secure your spot...

Lower Skeena Valley Fall Steelhead

Looking for the quintessential British Columbia angling experience? If so, this is your trip. We’ll fish a number of wild rivers, including the remote and intimate upper Copper, a true steelhead Shangri La, as well as the mysterious Kitsumkalum. In play will also be primo swinging water on the Skeena mainstem in classified zones II and IV. You might even find yourself fishing a well-hidden, very wild middle Nass tributary. We’ll swing wet flies and, with favorable conditions, fish dries. Fall-run Skeena steelhead are free-rising and will readily pounce on a waking fly. In certain situations they’ll even move to a dry fly presented upstream. Connecting with a 15- to 20-pound steelhead on top is undoubtedly one of the greatest thrills in flyfishing. This adventure also features the exciting opportunity to fish select lower Skeena streams, including the very scenic Kasiks, Exchamsiks and Exstew for trophy coho. Depending on flows, these great gamefish can often be pursued with sight-fishing tactics. To fully understand the thrill of the Skeena’s coho fishing, you have to experience it.Click here to visit the trip page on my website.

Words to Live By

On any given day of the year, somewhere on the planet, there is a big, bright, sea-run fish, charged with the ocean’s relentless energy, pushing into a river, ready and willing to ambush a well-presented fly. All we need to do is get there and make the cast

Best regards & good fishing,
