St Patrick’s Day and Staff Funeral Attendance - Tomorrow

Tomorrow is St Patrick’s Day and as long as Irish Iris is on our staff, it will be celebrated at Western Heights. (We love Iris).
Children are encouraged to dress in green, die their hair green, come as a leprechaun, wear the Shamrock, or whatever takes your Irish fancy though (no bringing Guinness for lunch please. 😉)
Tomorrow afternoon a good number of our staff will be attending the funeral of our Office Manager’s mum, Gwen. Joy is an amazing woman, incredibly talented, thorough, organised, smart and helpful. I treasure her contribution, as do our staff, so we will be taking this opportunity to be with her tomorrow at this sad time.
We have ensured all children will be well cared for, and our office will be manned (womanned), though they will be new to the role, so patience will be appreciated.

Easter Weekend Holiday Details

Easter has been falling during the school holidays over the past few years. This year that changes though, so we need to remind you of the actual details.

Western Heights School is closed for Easter on Friday 25 March, Monday 28 March and Tuesday 29 March.

That Tuesday might catch you out as it is not a public holiday for others, only for schools.

Waitakere Sport Community Fun Run - Jog

Harcourts Blue Fern Realty is very kindly sponsoring our free community fun run and we’d love you to participate! You can register at:

www.tinyurl.com/sumfunrun                                                This is a free Sport Waitakere community event happening on Friday, March 18. There is a 2.5km loop or a 5km loop. We will meet on the courts at Summerland Primary at 5pm for a 5.30pm kick off. There will be a brief prize giving at 6.30pm. They will be selling burgers and drinks after the race so why not plan an easy Friday night's dinner at the school with your familyl.

Prams and puppies welcome. Children may dress up in costume if they would like - and since we are all kids at heart I think adults can too.

We will have a bucket for a coin donation to the Fiji relief fund too.

They need lots of volunteers, if you'd like to help with food or be on the road safety team or the finish line as a marshall, please let Summerland school office know on 8367460.

The Call of the Wild at WHS

One of the best things about Western Heights in recent times, in my humble opinion, is our new music programme run by teacher Mark McLay.
Mark is a seriously cool music teacher. He makes many of his own musical instruments, repairs and revitalises tired and damaged instruments and provides an eclectic mix of all
manner of musical instruments, and objects that can be used as musical objects. We are incredibly lucky to have his deep and diverse talents available to us all.
Last week his kids were outdoors spread around our grounds, drumming in groups, self managing, leading their learning and having awesome fun. (Thanks to Resene for their bucket sponsorship - doubly appropriate as we are a Bucket-Filler school and Resene filled our buckets by giving us empty packets.)

Schools’ Krypton Factor this Sunday

The West Zone  Schools’ Krypton Factor competition kicks off at 9am this Sunday and finishes around 1.30pm followed by a presentation ceremony.  It is at Woodlands Park School. We wish our competing children every success. Thanks to teacher Nuree Greenhalgh for coordinating this event and preparing our children.

WHS Carpark Turning Rules Reminder

We have clarified our No Right Turn sign.
These restrictions coincide with the fixed times speed restrictions around our school.
At the two busiest times of the day there is a 40kph speed limit around our school.
The same thing applies to turning right - between 8:40 and 9:10am, and again between 2:30 and 3:15pm we have a NO Right Turn restriction in place.
This is our own sign, not a New Zealand Road Transport sign or rule. We hope this clarifies any confusion, and makes life more convenient for all drivers. Thanks.

Farewell Mr Andrew Noakes - Reminder

After three decades of sterling service to Western Heights School - as a teacher and as a Deputy Principal also for a time - Mr Andrew Noakes has announced his retirement, effective as of the end of this term.

I am sure you will join me in wishing Andrew well, and I am equally sure his children will look to make the most of their remaining time in Andrew’s class.

We are sad to lose Andrew, as he is a true character, a multi talented and passionate teacher and full of ideas and humour.

However, as one door closes, a new one opens, and we are delighted to be able to bring Jarred on board. More about Jarred Tito in a later issue.

Official Farewell for Andrew Noakes

Friday 8 April - 11am

Farewell Assembly followed by a light lunch at

Western Heights Primary School

126 Sturges Road

More info to follow soon.
