May 2018,  Vol 4, No 12 -  Melbourne Australia Top Suites

Melbourne Australia’s Top Suites

Australia remains one of my favorite countries to visit and over the past decade has accumulated a number of truly excellent top-end luxury resorts, but when it comes to luxury city hotels, the number of truly excellent properties is stunningly limited. With The Economist ranking Melbourne the most livable city in the world for the seventh straight year, in this issue with the help of some top travel agents we look at the best places and suites to stay in when you visit.

OVERVIEW

Recently The Economist ranked Melbourne, Australia as the most livable city in the world, ahead of Vienna, Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, Adelaide, Perth, Auckland, Helsinki and Hamburg, so not a single American City in the top 10, although Australia and Canada captured six spots. Figuring Melbourne’s status – for the seventh consecutive year - might mean that it will be on a future itinerary, in this issue, we look at the best suites at the city’s top ranked hotels.

1. CROWN TOWERS MELBOURNE

A central part of Melbourne’s Crown Casino complex, Crown Towers Melbourne is the only hotel in the city rated 5-stars by Forbes Travel Guide, which describes the entrance as through “heavy glass doors into the impressive lobby, your eyes are drawn to the grandiose chandelier illuminating the highly polished black granite floors and marble pillars.” Overall interior design throughout the hotel is a contemporary take on art deco where “slick surroundings are accented with pops of color. Come evening, the sound of live jazz echoes softly throughout.”

Its Yarra River south bank location is in the city’s central business district and the Crown complex is a destination in itself with luxury gaming facilities, high-end boutiques, an extensive spa and more than a dozen upscale restaurants and nightclubs. For exercise, there is a state-of-the-art gym that overlooks a heated lap pool, and rooftop tennis courts with views of the city.

Tower Suite
At 1,950 sq. ft. the Tower Suite offers features two large bedrooms each with luxury bathrooms, a separate lounge and dining area. The first bedroom houses one King size bed, and the second bedroom with two King single beds. It also features the latest Video on Demand interactive system, iPod docking station and an in-built technology wall panel. View more suite types here.

2. PARK HYATT MELBOURNE
Across from Fitzroy Gardens, Park Hyatt Melbourne décor is all about quiet, contemporary luxury — hints of art deco design are found throughout, from the laser cut marble floors, chrome accents and polished dark wood furniture. Forbes, which gives the hotel 4-stars, notes its “two-story lobby is a stunner, with a grand curved staircase and walls of glass, a prime introduction to this sleek but inviting hotel.”

Notable is the hotel’s Park Club Health & Day Spa with its 82-foot edgeless lap pool.
Overlooking the city skyline, the outdoor tennis court is open for play and for private tennis lessons. Rooms have subtle art deco furnishings, including madrona-paneled walls, chrome accents and plush seating. Park Club rooms and suites include access to the private lounge, which serves cocktails and light bites in the evening.

The 2,583-square-foot Presidential Suite has a baby grand piano, rosewood and silk walls, a marble entry, formal living and dining rooms and a fireplace and wet bar.

Presidential Suite
The 2,583 sq. ft. Presidential suite has a double king bedroom, formal living and dining rooms, with Italian marble bath and jetted spa tub. From the marble entry with baby grand piano and gas-operated fireplace, plus kitchen and wet bar with separate entrance. You also get a separate study with enhanced lighting, and in the master bath a spacious walk-in shower and oversized custom marble spa bath tub.

Ambassador Suite
1,850 sq. ft Ambassador Suite features one king bedroom, a separate living room with a fireplace and formal dining table that seats six and a separate guest powder room. There’s a kitchenette with separate entrance for entertaining and a separate study. The master bath has a walk-in shower and marble bath with soaking tub &and inset TV. More suite types here.

3. GRAND HYATT MELBOURNE
City Club Health & Fitness
Grand Hyatt Melbourne has been a popular luxury hotel choice in the city 30 years, and its Collins Street entrance is tucked between designer boutiques, trendy bars and popular restaurants. Forbes Travel Guide says, “The retention of the hotel’s staff speaks volumes to us about the hotel itself. A repeat visit will always include a familiar face.”

City Club is the largest hotel gym in the Asia-Pacific region with a rooftop tennis court, indoor swimming pool, golf nets, a basketball court and private spa treatment rooms. There are 16 event and meeting spaces to accommodate private seminars for up to 1,500 guests.

Premier Suite
Located on the 33rd floor, the one-bedroom Premier Suite has expanded to 1,960 sq. ft. with floor-to-ceiling city skyline views. There are two separate living spaces and a 72-inch television with a Bose surround sound system. The Italian marble bathroom includes sunken spa tub, rain shower, water body jets, Toto toilet and double vanity.
Additional highlights include butler’s pantry, double bed pull-out sofa and guest bathroom. You also get daily continental breakfast, all-day refreshments, and evening drinks with canapés

Diplomatic Suite
The 1,585 sq. ft. one bedroom Diplomatic Suite offers stunning Yarra River and Melbourne city views, and features a kitchenette, open living and dining area, with a separate office space. The master bath offers two walk-in showers and a sunken tub overlooking the Yarra River surrounded by Italian marble. You also get daily continental breakfast, all-day refreshments, evening drinks with canapés. View more suite types here.

4. THE LANGHAM, MELBOURNE
Located near Flinders Street Station, Melbourne’s Arts District easy access to shops, restaurants, and bars, the hotel is located on the Yarra River. Decorated and furnished in the same distinctive style as other Langham hotels around the world, it melds both contemporary and classic aesthetics. “The entrance lobby features elegant chandeliers and enormous vases of fresh flowers, while just outside, the hotel’s signature pink London taxi stands ready and waiting to whisk you away to the city’s center,” reports Forbes Travel Guide. Like Grand Hyatt, Forbes gives the hotel, which has made the top lists of both Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure recommended status.

Of note, the Chuan Spa keeps an extensive range of beauty treatments and relaxation therapies, with a particular focus on traditional Chinese medicine. From hot stone massage to clinical-grade facials. The ninth-floor gym offers sweeping city views and there is a 52-foot pool and hydrotherapy Jacuzzi.

Chairman Suite
The 1,743 sq. ft. two-bedroom Chairman Suite offers views of the Melbourne skyline and Yarra River. There is a living room and dining area, plus separate office.

Residence Suite
Designed to be an apartment, the 1,442 sq. ft. Residence Suite comes with plush living and dining areas, two full size bedrooms, each with ensuite baths, a kitchen complete with modern conveniences, and even its own laundry. The Residence Suite can interconnect with two more rooms to create a four-bedroom layout, good for families or if you are traveling with security or senior staff and want to conduct private meetings in your suite. View more suite types here.

5. THE LYALL HOTEL and SPA

The Lyall Hotel and Spa with just 40 suites fits the bill as a boutique hotel, however, it offers the services you expect in a larger luxury hotel, namely 24-hour room-service, 24-hour concierge, daily same day laundry and dry cleaning, valet parking and spa services.

Platinum Suite

The 1507 sq. ft two-bedroom Platinum Suite features contemporary oriental design and two outdoor patios. For more suites click here.
