Farewell Mr Andrew Noakes - Reminder
After three decades of sterling service to Western Heights School as a teacher - and as a Deputy Principal also for a time - Mr Andrew Noakes has announced his retirement, as of the end of this term. I am sure you join me in wishing Andrew well. We are sad to lose Andrew, as he is a true character, a multi talented and passionate teacher and full of ideas and humour. Official Farewell for Andrew Noakes Friday 8 April - 11am - TOMORROW Farewell Assembly for our community to share. This is followed by a light lunch which is by invitation only in order to keep it manageable. Thanks for your understanding.

First Aid Training for Our Staff
Last week thirty of our WHS staff attended a four hour St John’s First Aide Refresher course. We learned how to deal with a range of challenges - from correct use of an Epi-Pen, to treating Diabetics, to dealing with car-crash victims (including one with a severed arm). We even learned the value of cling wrap as a medical tool! You can rest assured your children are in good, safe hands here.

Gr8 Sk8 Action
Our children love the ramps and rails that we bring out every Wednesday lunchtime. Our School Councillors do a great job managing all the equipment, the children and their safety. Special mention to Connor for his awesome work here. Devontae was getting some mean air coming off the ramp - as you can see above.

World of Maths at Western Heights
Last week our middle and senior school children were treated to a wonderful maths exhibition of hands-on interactive displays, puzzles, challenges and activities. They had heaps of fun experimenting, thinking and trialling ideas and solutions. They cooperated, discussed, brainstormed and persevered - all excellent life-skills to develop along with the thinking and maths skills that went with it.

WHS Disco
Thank you everyone who supported our Disco on Friday. Thank you to our School Council, Jo-Ann Yukich and Alannah Lupe-Houban for your efforts on the night. It was also a day of funerals - we joined Board member Mark Sullivan to sadly farewell his sister tragically taken by cancer. Our extended family also had a tangi to attend, so I had to collect and host Waimara Taumanu - and couldn’t attend the disco. Hence no disco photos for me to share either - sorry.

Inter School Softball Tournament
Western Heights entered three teams in the West Zone Schools’ Softball Tournament - Girls, Boys and Mixed T-Ball. Though we didn’t quite win any of the three competitions, we were the most successful school overall, with a sixth place out of 12 for Mixed T-Ball, third place out of 12 for Boys, and second place (!) out of 12 for our girls. I was very, very proud of all our children. They played hard and fair, were exceptionally good sports, and demonstrated excellent skills. We didn’t have as many club players as the winning schools, but our children had trained hard daily at lunchtimes for weeks, and were as well prepared as they could be. Thanks to our parent coaches and supporters, thanks to coach and sports coordinator Tim Taura and to Jo-Ann Yukich for her help and support. A great team effort from everyone! PS - apologies I didn’t get photos as I was umpiring all day.

Softball Champs of Another Kind
My 15th Grade boys team won the Plate Final last Sunday. I am very proud of them all. Tiaki finished the season as top batter too, so that was very pleasing. Also on a personal note, I have completed my last assignment for my post grad studies Mindlab Course at Unitech on Digital and Collaborative learning. It’s quite a relief to have that done, but I will start stage two at mid year and begin all over again..

League Fans Tell Their Stories:
What An Awesome Day - by Noah Buckley-Dickson: On an exciting Sunday I travelled in my Mum's car with my Dad to Mount Smart Stadium to see the New Zealand Warriors take on the Melbourne Storm at Mount Smart Stadium. Dad and I roamed past a man selling some of the best Warriors flags I have ever seen! Then suddenly I stopped and hoped that I could have an incredible Warriors flag. So my Dad and I went to the man and asked what the price of the flags were? The man said that one was fifteen dollars and one ten dollars. Yay! I got one! Finally the game began! The Warriors kicked off! Shaun Johnson must have whacked the ball really hard! They were not doing that good in the first half. In the second half the Warriors were in the lead until the Storm got some points and the score was fourteen - fourteen! It was two minutes to full time and last try wins. Warriors picked up the ball and ran super fast! After that the Warriors knocked-on! The Storm picked up the ball and ran fast and they scored the last try and scored the kick. NO! After that my Dad and I left Mount Smart Stadium to the train station feeling very disappointed! By Noah Buckleigh-Dickson Room 16

Max’s Warriors Day Out: On an exciting Sunday my dad and my brothers went to Mount Smart stadium to see the New Zealand Warriors take on the Melbourne Storm. The Warriors kicked off and Storm scored! I knew the Warriors would score before half time. We went to get doughnuts at half time. I tried the ball activity. I threw the ball in the hole and won a drink bottle. Ben tried eight times and got six in. Ben won eight bands. We went back to the game. It became very exciting so I felt like joining in the game. The score was 21-14 to the Storm but Kata had really wanted to win! On the way home we went to McDonalds. I saw lots of birds going into one tree and I was curious to see what they were doing. We sadly went back home as we wanted the Warriors to win too. By Max Talbot Room l6 |

Dad Jokes
Today a guy knocked on my door and asked for a small donation toward a local swimming pool. I gave him a glass of water. I broke up with my gym today. We were just not working out. With great power comes great electricity bill. Sometimes I use big words I don't fully understand to make myself sound more photosynthesis. What do you call a dinosaur with a surprisingly impressive vocabulary? A thesaurus. How many Germans does it take to screw in a light bulb? Just one. They’re fiercely efficient and not really given to jokes. Whatever you do, always give 100%. Unless you are donating blood.
