Easter Weekend Holiday - NO School Tuesday

Easter has been falling during the school holidays over the past few years. This year that changes though, so we need to remind you of the actual details.

Western Heights School is closed for Easter on Friday 25 March, Monday 28 March and Tuesday 29 March.

That Tuesday might catch you out as it is not a public holiday for others, only for schools.

HOLI - Festival of Colours at WHS

Today our Junior school celebrated HOLI – the Indian Festival of Colours. This involves the throwing/streaking of different coloured powder in a fun celebration of colour. They used coloured powder made out of cornflour, food colouring and water. Children were encouraged to apply baby oil first to minimise the staining on their skin and hair.
Middle and senior school will be celebrating HOLI next Wednesday.

The money raised goes to our Outdoor Stage, giant sandpit project. Thanks for your support.

Our staff and students came dressed in the Emerald Green of Ireland - well to be honest, in a lot of different shades of green.

Special thanks to “Irish Iris” - Mrs MR to most - for making her usual special effort to make this a special occasion for our staff and school.

Pay It Forward With PJs

Pay it Forward is about people like us giving to someone else and making a positive difference.

Last year 'Pyjamas in June' was a Pay it Forward initiative that saw our Western Heights community  donating 80 pairs of pyjamas to our children of West Auckland.

This year teacher Annette Pram (who with her class coordinated this Pay it Forward last year) has joined forces with Pomaria Primary school to see if we can do it all again - only even better. The pyjamas will be going to the many families who live in caravan parks in our community.

Our winter is cold, and living in a caravan makes it even colder. During winter  the rate of preventable illnesses, especially respiratory ailments, in children escalates.

Pyjamas are as valuable for what they bring as much as for what they keep away.

Annette and room two's request to you is a donation of new pyjamas, or socks, or a blanket, to keep our West Auckland children warm this winter.

Please drop your kind donation off to Annette Pram in Room 2.

Inter School Softball Tournament

Western Heights has three teams entered in the West Zone Schools’ Softball Tournament - Girls, Boys and Mixed T-Ball.

Thistles place on Tuesday 5 April, at Starling Park Ranui. We start at 9:40am and finish at 2:40pm.

Each team needs an Umpire and a Scorer. Any parent volunteers for these roles will be greatly appreciated - let me know via email at macash@mac.com or via text on 021779009. Thanks.

Schools’ Krypton Factor

The West Zone  Schools’ Krypton Factor competition kicked off at 9am last Sunday at Woodlands Park School. Our competing children did themselves, our school, and their families proud.

Thanks to teacher Nuree Greenhalgh for coordinating this event and preparing our children.

Gabe’s Going Great

Gabe wanted to share with us his results from the last GKR inter-dojo Karate tournament.  It’s a fun and friendly competition amongst all the Dojo’s in the region.

There were 20 children in his grade (up to 8 year olds).  That’s a large group for this competition.

He initially tied with two other children for second place in Kata (Demonstration) but as they dont share placings he had to do his Kata again. A rushed performance meant missing out on third place coming in fourth - fourth out of 20 is still great going.

Next he moved onto Kumite (self defence/fighting) where he came 3rd - we are all very proud of him as it was a tough battle to the finish.

Finally the Dojo he belongs to won the tournament and gets to keep the trophy for the second year running.

Mum was part of the parent paparazzi so Gabe has picked some photos to share with us.

He is very proud of his achievement and the work he has put in to get there, and his family are very proud of him too, as it was a large group and to come out top four in Kata and top three in Kumite was fantastic.
